Esky still shouldn't hit leadoff.
I'm not sure Raul can play 2nd, but I'd be willing to experiment with it.
i'd like someone to tell me why hosmer couldn't play 2nd, though. i'm sure he'd look stupid on double plays or whatever, but someone tell me why he'd be so bad that it wouldn't work at all.
This guy is one of our top prospects, but he plays SS. I'm not sure Raul can play 2nd, but I'd be willing to experiment with it.
The last left-handed thrower to play second base in a major league game was Don Mattingly, who was on the field for one batter when the Yankees and Royals resumed the famed “pine-tar” game in 1983. Bert Campaneris had been the Yankees’ second baseman during the original game on July 24, but he was on the disabled list when the game resumed on August 18. Note that Ron Guidry was the Yankees’ center fielder when the game resumed; Jerry Mumphrey, who was the center fielder when the original game concluded, had been traded in the interim. (It wasn’t Guidry’s first appearance in the outfield; he had played center in the ninth inning of a blowout win on the next-to-last day of the 1979 season.) At any rate neither Mattingly nor Guidry got near the ball as the Royals’ only batter after the game resumed, Hal McRae, struck out.
if you can name one other left handed second baseman to ever play at the college level or above then i will answer your question.
why is handedness so important?
baseball is actually pretty mean to lefties when you think about it. like, you should just train all lefties to pitch the second you figure out they are lefties. or make a clockwise base path all lefties league.
a lefty can't catch because throwing to third is awkward. can't play third because charging a bunt and throwing to first is super awkward (see mattingly pic). making the turn on a double play is awkward as well which throws out ss and 2nd. make the base paths clockwise and it becomes a lefties game.

yes
Sys has a fair amount of good baseball observations and then comes out with this... Mind-boggling
also i'm not really picturing in my head why being lefty would be so awkward for double plays very well.
