I would like to see us sign another arm to have just in case Duffy doesn't look good this spring. I'd hate to rest all of our hopes on him returning to form.

Agreed, can't have enough pitchers.  Have some friends that are Pirates fans and they are pissed they did not resign Volquez.  :dunno:

Nobody gives J-Guts any credit. He had a better year than Vargas. They are very similar pitchers, though.

Based on what? Not stats...

I think the ideal rotation is:
Ventura
Vargas
Volquez (Killer V's?!)
Duffy
Guthrie

More likely:
Ventura
Volquez
Vargas
Guthrie
Duffy

Volquez's peripherals lagged his performance last year, due largely to a significantly lower than usual BABIP and line drive rate than is typical for him, even in 2008 which was his best year by far.  I doubt that is sustainable, but I sure hope so.

On what planet is Duffy our #5?

Not on planet Earth. This I can assure you.

I don't get the narrative that Duffy is unstable and flukey.

The same planet where he pitched in relief all last April and Ned Yost is our coach and we have a young superstar and 3 "solid veterans" in the rotation with him.  I bet we try to limit his innings again some and he doesn't start until April 20th against the Twins, the first time we need to start our #5.

Duffy is easily my favorite pitcher, by the way, and if he started #2 I'd be really excited, but it won't happen.

If I could put it together, it would be:

1. Ventura
2. Duffy
3. Volquez
4. Vargas
5. Guthrie

Roys could've saved almost $15 million and signed Morse and Medlen instead of Volquez and Morales and had the better player in both cases!

Medlen is a question mark, based on TJ last year, but this is still a rough ridin' great move. If he is in 2013 form, our staff has pretty good depth w/o touching Finnegan/Zimmer/Hoch/Lamb, etc.

#Royals designate Johnny Giavotella for assignment to make room for Kris Medlen. Medlen expected to be ready June or July

Love this signing tho. Even if he sucks because of TJ, I love taking a chance.
