like they make a conscious adjustment to their instinctive movement?  or just through experience, their instinctive movement adjusts (like learning to do anything physical, riding a bike, for example)?  or they exercise a conscious control to overide their instinctive movements, but only at a gross-level (like swing/don't swing), the fine scale details of the swing (if allowed to proceed) still being instinctive?

Batters can recognize if a pitcher has a tell, meaning if their mechanics are different on a curve/change.  At the major league level its all about timing and staying balanced during your swing.  You have less than a second to recognize, decide, and act on the pitch.  There is no seeing the laces, unless its a slider and you see a red dot coming towards you.

Its just like anything in sports. If you've ever shot a basketball, your mind calculates how far and high to throw the ball to have the best chance to make the basket based on what your eyes tell it. I think there is some conscience decision, but mostly instinct.

Highest baseball I played was 8th grade so I'm not an expert on that.

Just so we are clear, these guys have probably the most elite hand-eye coordination in all of sports.  They are freaks.

I'm done until they get within 1 game of a playoff spot, or make a move to improve the team. I've given them plenty this year. This thread is fine without me.

Asian ping pong players seem pretty elite.

Ned in post-game: "I gambled. I gambled and lost."

Hey Billy, you're a full time DH who only has 3 HRs and has been pretty crappy in general this year

Interesting how he says he might be willing to renegotiate his deal after this season and play for less than the club's $12.5 million option; that's a refreshing attitude in this day and age. That said, if he doesn't improve over the second half (assuming he doesn't get moved before the nonwaiver trade deadline--apparently the Mariners, who've always liked him, may still want him) I can't see the Royals paying him to stay.
