Vargas has 3 games with over 6+ ERs. Duffy has 0. Duffy has almost 3 times as many SO/9, and 9 less HRs surrendered (in less innings but still).

I'll take a strikeout pitcher over a fly ball pitcher in a 1 game playoff everytime.

It doesn't matter who we want. We are getting our ace, James "Alex Smith" Shields. Dayton and Ned don't want an ace pitching controversy any more than Marty wanted a QB controversy when he benched Rich.

Different angle, just minutes before.

Upon closer inspection, that outtie is record book type stuff. Very impressive.

bb/9 - duff 3.6, vargas 2.0
so/bb - duff 1.90, vargas 2.96
hr/9 - duff .6, vargas 1.1
era+ - duff 157, vargas 116
whip - duff 1.073, vargas 1.246

aside from walks and innings per start, duff has been better. i just worry about his consistency. if he keeps it up the rest of the year, he's the guy.

Dick Duffy has been one of the best pitchers in baseball the last 6 weeks. You play the hot hand or you get fired. Pretty simple really

ESPN pitcher game score is pretty arbitrary, but let's use it as a starting point for comparison purposes

game score = 50 + (outs) + (2*IP after the 4th) + (K) - (2*H) - (4*ER) - (2*unearned runs) - (BB)

for reference, the best game score so far this year is 102 (Kershaw's no hitter vs Colorado), but you kind of start at 50 and above or below is considered pretty good or pretty bad

this is each starter's 2014 game log, in chronological order. i've added a space between months to kind of break it up in chunks.

i don't want to look at the other 29 teams, but i'd imagine having all 5 starters be +50 for their season average game score is pretty unheard of  :dunno:

james has only had 1 game over 50 in his past 9.  :frown:

i'm a little surprised that yordano is above vargas. but it just goes to show you how badass he and duff have been

Shields had a similar stretch of games in 2012, and then went on to carve everybody up the rest of the year. I hope that happens again.

For the Duffy vs Vargas debate, it would partially depend on how many quality left handed bats the opponent has. Duffy has been unreal against lefties this year.

he had a fairly poor stretch last year too, and recovered to pitch well at the end of the year.

I must've read Vargas SO/9 wrong. Still #teamDuff

it's too late for any noteworthy adv stats, but i will say, these are hosmer's combined 2011-2013 stats, by month, and it is encouraging:

April .217/.303/.350, 5 HR, 21 RBI
May .256/.297/.393, 7 HR, 37 RBI
June .276/.333/.428, 9 HR, 38 RBI
July .293/.346/.447, 9 HR, 38 RBI
Aug .295/.356/.442, 11 HR, 43 RBI
Sept .294/.339/.453, 9 HR, 40 RBI

this year so far:

April .303/.358/.384, 0 HR, 9 RBI
May .246/.275/.352, 1 HR, 14 RBI
June .195/.240/.292, 3 HR, 12 RBI

so obviously he is having a down year even for his typically down early months. but we have 3 full years and 1681 at-bats that tell us Hosmer has BY FAR his best months from July-September

oh and btw so far this July he is 5 for 6
