That's professional sports, mocat

an outstanding football player or basketball player usually plays every game, not every fifth game.

The value of a starting pitcher versus position players was discussed a lot when the Royals traded Bret Saberhagen to the Mets for three everyday players.  The Royals argued 3 players were more valuable than a once per five day pitcher. Only one of the players (Keith Miller) outperformed expectations.

Angels 3 game preview.....

We are facing Richards (3.00 ERA 1.28 Whip) Weaver (3.12, 1.27) Tropeano (1.69, 1.44)
Richards is a solid pitcher. Weaver is still decent but not as good as he once was. Tropeano has 17 career starts.  I believe every start by those 3 has gone 5.0 Innings or more.

Angels offense has had issues.  They only have 57 runs in 19 gms, batting only .217 so far.
They have been out-homered 24 to 13.  Trout and Calhoun are only regular players that are hitting over .260

Starting pitchers only play like 70% of 1/5th of games anyway, further diminishing their impact. You can have 5 tom brady's and still lose tons of games (look at the mets lol)

It can't be surprising to anyone in this thread that lib^7 doesn't get baseball, right?

It can't be surprising that WackyCat08 has to barge into a discussion that doesn't include him. Very liberal atheist of him

if there were, say, 2 games per week, you could have 2 great pitchers and basically that would be the difference between you and the other teams.

also the mets won 90 games last year, despite having 40% of their rotation be bad at pitching

I was under the impression that we let him go in the off season, was pleasantly surprised when he first appeared in a game this year.

We all know that having a great starting pitcher on the mound gives you a better shot to win that game.

From 93-98' Greg Maddux was on good Braves teams.  He finished 1st,1st,1st,4th,2nd,5th in the Cy Young and a combined 2.15 ERA in the 6 years. The Braves record was 125-66 in his starts.

So they won 65.4% of the time he started.    As good as Maddux was, with those #s, the Braves should have won more than that when he started.   But that is how baseball works sometimes.   A pitcher W/L record is an overrated stat...but I will say that the Braves were only 18-24 in the games where Maddux was not involved in the decision.  Our Royals have had a good record when our starting pitcher isn't involved in the decision (not shocking having the tremendous Pen we have)

Yeah, the best teams still only win about 2/3 of the time when they have their best pitcher on the mound. I think it's because he's usually only going to throw about 2/3 of a game, and because baseball is just a low-scoring sport. Most teams only average about 4 runs per game, so a single error by anyone on the field has the potential of losing a game.

Definitely some truth in that.

Kershaw 11'-15' ....he had an ERA of 2.11, Dodgers went 106-53 in his starts. So 66.7%

Starting pitching is important component. Having a ridiculous bullpen has been a important component for our Royals.  As awesome as Kershaw/Maddux were in those 11 seasons, their teams only went 36-44 when they weren't figured into the decision

Royals have the best in a lot of things dealing with the bullpen....Since 2014 Our 61-33 record (64.4 win%) by the bullpen is the best win % in MLB (pirates 60.8 is 2nd)

Why does Chris Young pitch better at the K than other stades?

he pitched pretty great in 2014, and i don't believe he pitched a single game in kc that year.  what evidence suggests he pitches any better in kc than in any other spacious field?
