!!!MOCATSTATS!!!

When the Royals score 4 or more runs, they are 14-2  (69-14 last year)
When the Royals score fewer than 4 runs, they are 1-5  (20-59 last year)

When Royals opponents score 4 or more runs, the Royals are 5-4  (24-55 last year)
When Royals opponents score fewer than 4 runs, the Royals are 10-3  (65-18 last year)

In Royals wins, the average score is 6.87-2.67 (+4.20)  (5.49-2.40 (+3.09) last year)
In Royals losses, the average score is 2.29-4.86 (-2.57)  (2.22-5.62 (-3.40) last year)

Summary: The Royals magic number is still 4 (as was talked about endlessly last year). The difference this year is when the other team puts up 4+ runs, the Royals still win more often than not. Also the Royals are beating the crap out of teams when they win, and are losing by closer margins than last year.

I like the 4 run stat, its cool.

But I have to think that stat is also pretty universal in baseball; ie. if you score 4 runs you generally win.

Yeah. Unless you are playing the 2015 Kansas City Royals. Then you generally lose anyway.

Will H-D-H be back to full strength by the @Det series?

And should it now be F-H-D-H for innings 6 through 9?

Thanks, and I'll listen off the air.

I hear what you're saying _FAN, but 2014 opponents were only 55-24 when scoring 4 or more vs the Royals. So they took advantage 70% of the time.

the Royals were 69-14 when scoring 4 or more. They won 83% of the time. That's ridiculous.

so far 1 month into 2015:

opponents win 44% of the time when scoring 4+
Royals win 87.5% of the time when scoring 4+

that's just silly. Obviously it matters to all teams, but I have to think it matters to the Royals even more. (i would have to take more time than i want to research other teams)

I feel confident about today and tomorrow.  Sunday will be tough as both pitchers are garbage and the KC bullpen is light years ahead of detroit's.

Herrera will have to serve his suspension at some point.

Yeah, but it's only two games, right? Maybe he should just drop his appeal and do his time during the upcoming Cleveland series?

I would be fine with young replacing Vargas or Guthrie. Those two combined have -.9 WAR. Young is in the positive. You can say that his numbers aren't a bunch better than theirs last year, but with aging pitchers it's very much about what you're doing now, and J-Guts/Vargy aren't pitching real well at all, whereas Chris young is. I love J-Guts more than is rational, but I'd be totally fine playing the hot hand right now.

I don't think WAR really means much when you start using it to compare players with different roles.

I wasn't trying to make an exact comparison. Just pointing out that Vargas and Guthrie aren't pitching well compared to their peers and Chris Young is. Since young has been a reasonably effective starter in the past, I think it makes sense to really consider making a change.

He has 2 games from the Chicago brawl and 5 from throwing behind Brett Lawrie.

By definition it really doesn't. WAR is position based

I pay for it. 15 for the year or 3 monthly. If you don't have At Bat on your phone you are missing out as a fan.

Last year: ERA, WHIP, SO/W, Innings per start.

Vargas - 3.71, 1.273, 3.12, 6.23
Guts - 4.13, 1.303, 2.53, 6.31
Young - 3.65, 1.230, 1.80, 5.69

TBH, I was also thinking Young would be a better option at 4/5, but after looking at the numbers it doesn't seem like it would be a huge difference. Its great to have him for long relief and nights like tonight when we need a spot start.

Vargas was very good last year til the last month.  In his first 26 starts, 17 of them he went 6 or more Inn and gave 2 ER or less.  3 other starts he did decent.... Went 7.2 gave up 3, then 2 gms he got pulled in the 6th giving up only 2 ER.   His last 4 starts were not good ( had decent 3.52 ERA in 3 postseason starts)and he's been shaky this year even tho 2 of his 4 starts he has gotten out of there only allowing 2ER.

Like to see get his location be more consistent, cause I think he can be a pretty decent #4.  Time will tell

vargas is fine. he's been pitching in cold weather the whole season but once it warms up, he'll get better. plus he's a lefty. if you want to pull either vargas or guts and replace with young, you pull guts.
