Maybe it's not a big deal with the portal these days but Mittie is losing Lee and Sundell. If he wants out, now's the time.
We have the #6 recruiting class and a McDonald's all American being compared to Caitlin Clark. Now is absolutely the worst possible time to lose him.
If he does leave I hope that Hoyt isn't his first call, she's not even the best gettable Big 12 coach we should call. My order is
JR Payne
Lisa Fortier
Kellie Harper
Jacie Hoyt
Fortier would be great, but I assume we'd get outspent by someone (whomever that is) and/or she sees Mark Few and thinks that's a good career path.
Why would Payne bail on CU at this point? I think she's clearly better schematically than Mittie, but her entire career is Rockies and west and you'd think she'd have had other offers the last couple of years.
Harper's probably an upgrade over Mittie, but she's also been fired at two of her last three jobs (NC State & Tennessee). NC State was justified (terrible in ACC play), though Tennessee is/was probably going to be a losing proposition for whoever took the gig unless they make the final four every other year (though she didn't recruit particularly well given the resources at UT). You'd think her eye would be on the SEC job market (Arkansas, Auburn, etc.).
I'm not saying Hoyt's the best choice, but it also represents the opposite of what Mean Gene typically does (boring, safe, semi-high floor, low-ceiling). If you look back at when Mittie was hired, he was coming off four straight seasons where he missed NCAAs and his first two seasons in the Big 12 with TCU were not good (10-26 in conference). But, he made NCAAs more often than not, his wife's from Junction, etc., so there you go.
I guess I'm saying that - if true - Mean Gene pursuing Hoyt is a pleasant surprise.
