The crowd looks no different than the crowd for the 2nd half of the K-State/Nebraska game.  KU fans left in the 2nd half after witnessing another embarrassing performance.  This is a picture of the crowd from the 1st quarter:

They look roughly the same except for the angle, daylight and whether the band is on the field or in the stands.  Maybe I'm missing something but I'm not sure what in your photo counters what's in Gooch's photo.  

Edit: Your photo also looks like it was taken with a way better phone/camera than Gooch's.  So there's that.

The picture I posted shows that the crowd was bigger after the pregame.  I just don't think 44,239 in attendance is that bad considering how embarrassing KU's performance has been this season.  Also, I don't blame people for leaving in the 2nd half of a blowout.
