Why is nobody mentioning why he's leaving SLU? This kid has a lot to prove off the court. True or not, the sexual assault allegations will only grow the perception that we are becoming Thug U.

A.) That sounds effing fantastic.
B.) Who else on our bball team has had off the court issues?  Like serious criminal activity?
C.) Just because we have a roster of large black men does NOT make us Thug U.
Jamar- manslaughter.

Willie Reed’s father discusses his son’s past at St. Louis, possible future at K-State
With his basketball career at St. Louis University now behind him, Willie Reed hopes to start fresh at Kansas State.

After visiting Manhattan last week and taking in Madness in Manhattan, the 6-foot-9, 220-pound forward, who averaged 12.4 points and 7.9 rebounds as a sophomore at St. Louis, decided he wanted to play for the Wildcats and applied to become a student.

He is not yet enrolled, and his father — Will Reed — can’t say for sure if or when he will be admitted. But he is confident it will happen.

“We anticipate him being a student at K-State within the next 60 days,” he said.

The process could get complicated. Before Reed requested his release from St. Louis, he was not enrolled at the school and was serving a semester-long suspension from the basketball team due to allegations of sexual assault made by a fellow student against him and a teammate in May.

No criminal charges were filed in the matter, and both Reed and his father insist he is innocent of any wrongdoing. But St. Louis administrators felt he violated the school’s student conduct code and needed to be punished. Will Reed is now in the process of suing the school.

That has led to all kinds of questions — from media, fans and K-State basketball coach Frank Martin. Will Reed agreed to discuss the matter in depth.

On the steps Willie Reed has taken to become a K-State student …

He has applied, but we haven’t heard anything yet. St. Louis is holding up some things on their end to allow it to go through. Hopefully it will happen really quickly here and we can go ahead and get enrolled at K-State.

On a change of scenery for his son …

Oh, he’s excited. After coming down and watching everything unfold Friday, he’s pretty pumped. He came home and got in the gym and worked out. You could just tell he had a spring in his step and was excited about the opportunity to get a fresh start and continue his education.

On what drew him to K-State …

K-State was one of the schools looking at him coming out of high school. But he had committed to St. Louis at the time, pretty much because of Rick Majerus and his pedigree of putting players in the league. He thought it would be best for him to play for a coach who could help him mature as a player and help him go to the next level.

K-State isn’t the program that it used to be. The program has really turned the corner under Frank Martin. He handles those kids. He gets on his kids. He hounds them. But he shows a lot of love as well. That’s something that, as a parent, goes a long way. I like that he’s someone who can push him, but be fair and help him get to that next level as both a player and a man.

On whether Willie Reed will he be on scholarship at K-State if everything goes according to plan …

I can’t really speak to that. The plan right now is to walk on for the first year.

On how Frank Martin handled the situation …

He had questions. Of course he did. In life as we become adults we understand there are two sides to every story. Basically what he did was sit down with Coach Martin and talk. Coach Martin looked him in the eye and said “OK, tell me what happened.” He told him what happened and he told him the truth. Coach believed him and felt that he was being sincere. If he didn’t we wouldn’t be as far along as we are right now. Coach took him at his word. It’s something that we think is a win-win situation for both the university and for Willie. K-State is an up-and-coming program, ready to take the next step and I believe Willie is ready to help them take that next step.

On how his son is spending his days with no class to attend …

He’s home working on his basketball game for a few hours, then he’s lifting weights trying to get stronger. We’re just waiting to see what happens. If we can get him into school this week he’ll be there on Monday attending classes. If not, and he has to wait until December, he’ll just stay at home and work with me until school starts.

On Willie Reed’s decision to leave St. Louis …

They wanted him to write a letter of apology to the young lady, to her family, to the coaches, to his teammates and to the school. I felt that was just too harsh for something that he did not do.

On his son’s role in the alleged sexual assault …

He didn’t do anything wrong. The police didn’t find anything and let everyone go. But when he came back to school St. Louis thought differently.

On feeling wronged by St. Louis …

I wanted to put it out there that he was innocent and this whole process was wrong. We felt like we were wronged by St. Louis University. They were trying to keep this under wraps and even sent Willie a text message that said not to talk to the media about it. They handled it all wrong. My son didn’t do anything. He just happened to be there with a teammate they thought deserved a suspension. They were getting him by association and felt he did the same thing in their eyes.

On what his son will try to accomplish if he ends up at K-State …

Reestablishing himself as a person first of all. K-State will be getting someone that has something to prove. Both on and off the court. He’s not this bad guy people are making him out to be.

Wow, I have a great deal of respect for that family.  You look around the country and you see real "thugs" who don't provide health care to their children, get into fights with other intercollegiate athletes at school, assault RA's, shoot people with air rifles, smoke the marijuana, etc....it's just nice to see a kid who was obviously wrongly labeled come out ahead.  Kudos to the K-State Family on this one.

I was pretty jacked to see Kellis go out and get this.  Maybe he will see a niche in hoops coverage :dunno:

While I still feel that SLU is a quality institution overall, there are real leadership problems endemic to the top brass.  Father Biondi (the UP) is basically Lew Perkins.  Now while that sounds fantastic, that's not the type of person you want as UP (the student body gave him a vote of no confidence the year before my freshman year due to his firing of several faculty members who spoke up for student rights).  I would not be surprised at all if the reason that this situation exists is because the girl is the daughter of a prominent STL business man or donor, and Biondi is doing this to appease the rich, white masses.  Hell, the parking garage on Olive exists because the son of a rich alum got caught with a shitload of cocaine on campus.  Other than that, someone should have told Willie that nothing good happens at Lacledes past 2 am.
