Propane v Charcoal. Grilling Thread
« on: September 13, 2010, 02:31:54 PM »
My grill shot craps this weekend.

I have cooked almost exclusively on a propane grill since high school.  I know how to do a lot with the propane grill.

That said, I am thinking hard about getting a charcoal grill this time around.

I grill 3-4 times a week during warm temps, and 1-2 a week in the winter.

Thoughts?

Are charcoal's as versatile as propanes?

Note: BGE not in my budget right now.

A) charcoal is better
B) charcoal is a pain in the ass

I have a big 4 burner propane but am thinking about getting a weber ketel for certain situations.  I'll never not have a gas though just because of ease of use/no clean up.

i won't eat meat that's been cooked on a bge on the account that it always tastes like eggs to me. i know they say it doesn't but it does is what i'm saying.

In a straight up gas vs. charcoal challenge I bet most posters wouldn't be able to tell a taste difference.

Yes there's exceptions like the BGE.

If you really grill as much as  you say you do then you'd be insane not to go with gas.  The purists will be here and beat charcoal into the ground but it's not practical if you're cooking most of your meals with it.

Weber makes some good gas grills.

Cheesy Mustache QB might make an appearance.

New warning: Don't get in a fight with someone who doesn't even need to bother to buy ink.

You can get a nice gas grill and a fairly cheap charcoal one and have the best of both worlds. Buy a chimney to start the charcoal though, nothing I hate more than someone who ruins food with the taste of lighter fluid.

This, I have a Weber Bullet and a gas grill.  The propane is used probably 3:1 because its easier.  I don't have to wait 25 minutes for heat.

Do the nice propane/cheap charcoal combo. I got a $150 Kenmore from Sears that's a 4 burner and over 40,000 BTU's. I use it 90% of the time.

I've been a charcoal purist for my whole grilling life.  That said I'm thinking about going the dual grill mode and having a propane grill for regular grilling.  Charcoal kicked my ass this summer, and it's a mess.

Solution (as stated above):  Get a nice Weber gas grill, and a small charcoal grill.  BOBW.

Dual mode FTW.

I prefer charcoal because it's great taste-wise, but it's not an exact science and there's always scooping the ashes out the bottom of the grill when you're done, takes longer for coals to be ready, etc...

Propane is quicker, easier to maintain a steady heat, and little or no clean up is needed.  Plus you can make a little packet of wood chips wrapped in foil to toss on to get a little smoke-action going in the food.

By the way, that was the first time a Clark family member ever ran something or somebody over at BSFS.

Propane FTW.
Who the eff are you? Hank Hill? Charcoal is so much better that it compensates for it being a pain in the ass to get warm (most of the time.)
