It's a hell of a lot more work than chili if you do it right.  But definitely better than chili.

It's good, but not nearly as good as chili. I'm insulted really.

I do it w/o the meat:  best vegan dish ever.  It's lots of fun to play with all the spices.

How do you make up for lack of ham hock?  Liquid smoke or sumpin?

Yeah, look at the "vegetarian version".  You add a little oil, too.

Yeah, look at the "vegetarian version".  You add a little oil, too.

Generally don't get down with vegan stuff, but that probably does taste nearly as good.  Smoked ham hocks are pretty damn incredible though.

At the very least, it's a vegan dish that will keep 99% of people that think they need a half pound of meat for every meal from bitching about eating hippie food.  I've actually never done that recipe w/ ham.  Will have to try some time and compare.

My former sister in-law (a hippie) is pretty good about making vegetarian/vegan dishes that still taste pretty damn good and don't make you wish she had added a bunch of meat to it.  At least, she does when other people are eating her food.  The stuff she eats on a regular basis, not so much.

I make it at least once a week with Andouille Sausage.  I met a girl recently that is from New Orleans.  She get authentic ingredients for fantastic Cajun dishes shipped from her family.    She is supposed to cook for me one of these days

Not sure about the love thing, but I'd throw a few pity F's her way in exchange for some great creole/cajun cooking.
