He and his family took loads of cash from auburn boosters and lied to the NCAA about it.  Pretty low character if you ask me.

i'm not being a hater willie, I'm being realistic. So many NFL teams have horrible, horrible, QB play, and Smith is good enough to play smart, conservative football and let his D win. I mean, yeah compared to the crap show QB play you see in Baltimore or in Dallas right now, Smith looks great, but he's not a top of the league guy. Chiefs fans just better hope they get a lead and turnovers in the playoffs. I don't want the game in Alex's hands.

He turns it on when he has too, but plays conservative with leads. Half of that is play calling too. His running ability has been a major asset this season. We're gonna win'em all!

Although I feel like we are at opposite ends of the Smith argument, I agree with this.  Smith is middle of the pack and you can win with that if you are good enough elsewhere.  If your gameplan is Smith slinging it, you're probably in trouble.  Smith made some plays in the NFC champ loss to the Giants I think it was, to give his team the lead with under 2 minutes to go.  His D choked though.  He CAN do it in a big game, but I wouldn't bet on it and I certainly wouldn't hope for it, particularly with Reid's time management.  Reid actively tries for FGs instead of TDs late and that is probably fine against these bad teams but won't work in playoffs.

It seems to me, in a sport where you have limted resources (i.e. salary cap), and you must be strategic about how you allocate those resources, the Chiefs have done a pretty good job of assembling a great defense and an offense with enough weapons to win football games.  The fact that they probably have the best "game manager" QB who limits mistakes and turnovers, who also has the ability to stretch drives with his legs when necessary, is probably a pretty good fit when you look at the overall strategy.

Alex Smith isn't a QB who is going to win you a game with his talent like Cam Newton.  But he also isn't going to lose you many games, either.  And it appears to me that the Chiefs have taken a pretty balanced approach to spending money on both sides of the ball (can't validate, though...going on anecdotal observation based on signings and contract extensions) to create a strong team, overall.

So, in a nutshell, Smith is the right guy for this particular team.  Everyone would like to have a great QB that can win you big games, but I also like having Justin Houston, too.

I come to this thread like three or four times a year, but I'm shocked that we're still talking about Alex Smith like there's some revelation about him that we haven't discovered yet.

He's like the living embodiment of a "B-".  But whatever.  That's what we asked of him, and this year, he's giving us B+ work, so I'm not going to complain.

I agree.  There's many ways to win football games.  QB driven play has dominated in the recent years but having a solid run game and defense is still a very viable way to win and increases the play of an average to above average QB.

Also it's shown lately that QB centric teams are risking a lot and completely tank when an injury occurs.

I don't have a problem with Alex being a game manager QB.  I have a problem with not paying him accordingly.  he's on a 4-year, 68mil contract.  at 17mil/year, you'd like to see him produce more.  at least IMO.

still love the Chiefs and hope they win a playoff game.

Good strategy (to me):

1) Spend money on a good QB that you can rely on (Alex Smith is 15th highest paid QB)
2) Spend money on a #1 receiver, but get cheap journeymen/rookies for the rest (Maclin is Top 10)
3) Spend money on a great TE, mainly because the absolute best (i.e. Gronk) will command about 8 million a year.  Strong ROI on that position.
4) Don't sign one great RB, but sign a couple million dollar guys and then draft rookies for the grinder every year to spit out
5) Get a serviceable LT, but then splurge on guards.  Better bang for your buck.
6) Get good kicker/punter. Worth their money in the NFL
7) Spend over half of your money on defense

Chiefs seem to do most of these, so I'm content with the personnel and direction of the team.

He's 15th in salary with a very low guaranteed number.. Seems reasonable for his play?

He's making less than Matt Stafford (14) and barely more than Andy Dalton (16).

I mean, unless you drafted a guy that's still in the middle of a rookie contract (i.e. Luck, Bridgewater), or you are starting Mariotta or Winston, that's what you're paying.  Unless you feel Sam Bradford or Nick Foles are better options, because that's 19 & 20 on the list, respectively.

$16-17 million is the floor for an experienced, competent starting QB in this league.  Otherwise, you're rolling the dice with a guy like Fitzpatrick or another journeyman/backup kind of guy.

I can agree with this, but that's on the Chiefs, and not Alex. He's been the most stable QB we've had since Trent, which I know isn't saying a lot, but still.

If you don't draft and develop a QB, you will pay Alex Smith $17 million dollars.  That's how this works.  From what I can tell, every other QB in the top 15, aside from Drew Brees, Jay Cutler, and Alex Smith were all drafted by the teams that are paying them the big money.

An in terms of passer rating, Smith has had comparable passer ratings as Philip Rivers (5) and Matt Ryan (7), and he's had considerably better stats than Joe Flacco (8) and Kapernick (11).  In the past three years, he's thrown for 56 TD to 17 INT (3:1 ratio), and he's thrown for 9600+ yards.  He'll eclipse 10k by the end of the regular season for sure.

The Chiefs are 29-17 since he's gotten here, and they've had zero losing seasons, which will continue this year.

And he did all of this with his best receiver being Dwayne Bowe, and in his first two years, his top pass catchers were an undersized RB and what was essentially a rookie TE.

We like to give the guy a lot of crap, but the numbers are there, and he's poised to have a great year this year, and his running backs are a guy from Abilene Christian and Spencer Ware.

All I'm saying is that we're paying the guy like a middle of the road QB, and we're getting every cent of that.  The results are better than what we're actually paying for compared to the ROI other franchises are getting from guys they're spending more money on.

I'm feeling chippy today, and I'm just tired of listening to whining about things that people don't take the time to look into themselves.

Did most people know that with what we're paying Alex Smith, at least with his salary averaged out across his contract duration, we could have him plus Sproles for less than the cost of one Matt Ryan?

People like Dax just want to bitch to get a rise out of ppl. Cf3 thinks he can PI the Chiefs into being a good team, like he did the Royals. Some of it is psychological fandom. This team has a special place in my heart this year tho. They overcame a lot and have me super jazzed for some postseason football. I need the Chiefs to step up, on K-State down years, and they have!

Alright guys, I have the Chiefs winning 10 games this year. Who's got the under? Let's make this bet!
I'll bet a holiday 5 pack on the under
Another year, another imaginary bet won.  :gocho:
