Strange that he was only drawing mid-major or less offers. Seems like power school either want to poach a coach from a P5 or get the perceived hot up-and-comer from a school that had success in the tourney.

-He's 55 and this is his first gig. He's probably more like Weis than Huggy.
-KSU likely hired him knowing he isn't going anywhere. Once the revised B12 contract comes out, and KSU is hurting for money, they won't have to worry about a highly paid coach being around forever even if he wins.
-Drew & Tang telling a high school they won't recruit there is code for "we aren't going to pay you to steer recruits our way anymore if you don't guarantee us this guy."

KU athletics was $10 million in the red last year.  K-State was $785k in the red.  In the midst of a pandemic K-State raised over $100 million more to build facilities.  Meanwhile they still himmmm and hawww about stadium improvements and half their sports complex is off campus on 50 year shitty lease

Yeah a major motivator with unquestioned recruiting prowess who is apparently connected enough to pull away big time assistants. It seems like the only thing he could possibly mess up is in the scheming department but obviously there’s no reason at this point to think it would be a problem.
