combined with the "we will enforce the laws", it certainly implies that traveling to the us-mexico border to present a case for asylum would be illegal and it is not; it is legal.

it also gives the impression that the united states follows its own immigration laws and allows asylum seekers to petition for asylum, and of course we are not doing that.

combined with the "we will enforce the laws", it certainly implies that traveling to the us-mexico border to present a case for asylum would be illegal and it is not; it is legal.

it also gives the impression that the united states follows its own immigration laws and allows asylum seekers to petition for asylum, and of course we are not doing that.

Not sure I really agree on either. Although the first point is well taken, I think there are plenty of arrivals who don’t appreciate what it even means to seek “asylum.” And even if they appreciate it on a very high level they don’t understand what it means to be persecuted from effectively a state sponsored group based on status in a protected class. In reality most are simply seeking a better life for their family, which while admirable is not a basis for requesting legal status.

On the second, you could be right about processing affirmative asylum claims, but at least my understanding is that the courts don’t have much choice but to determine asylum claims for those detained at a port of entry. I could be wrong about that, though.
