As young as 4, how intense can a game with 4 year olds in anything be.

I do like the sentiment about "don't punish the players" cause on surface level that makes sense, it truly isn't their fault, but like the entire point of kid sports is to have their parents there, cause the only other thing to do is like ban the parents from being there, which negates even having the kid play.

My experience is the younger the kids, the worse the parents. Parents of teens don't get that worked up like the little kids.

one of my lil croppings played at the state HS tennis meet a couple of weeks ago. The regular season meets out here in the hinterlands are very chill but at the state meet level you start to run into some players and parents that are nuts. One doubles match had both teams blatantly lying about calls while getting input from spectators. Things devolved into a shouting fest involving players and parents after a disputed match point.

I think i've said this on here before, but tennis parents can be nuts. My kids just play in like rec/club tennis. Both are decent in the level they play in. A lot of it is during the day so I can't normally attend the matches. Mrs SF has told me that there are lunatic parents but I normally just shrugged it off. One day she said she couldn't make a match and I had to go. I told her they would be fine and I would just pick up but she insisted because it was a tournament match and she didn't want our kid to get bullied by parents. Sure enough, I was off to the side and my kid was whipping ass and a mom started talking crap and calling balls in and out. I saw it happen once, but it wasn't close so I just let it go. Happened again so I walked over and stood close so she knew I was there and watching my kid. She didn't say anything after that, but this bitch was going to go after my kid because she thought no one was around. It was unreal.

For Kansas high school regular season matches, the kids are responsible for calling shots in or out. I think at the State meet they can request an official if needed. Most of the time it works out fine. The player's HS coach can talk with them during changeovers but otherwise, spectators are not supposed to be giving the players input during matches.

In club type tennis, yes. There is someone there getting the kids where they are supposed to be, but for the most part it is up to the kids to keep score and call balls in and out. Some of the kids are just rough ridin' awful and cheat their asses off and it's annoying. My kids are pretty chill and it's funny how it affects them. One will get pissed eventually and go into whip ass mode. The other will get frustrated and it basically ends the game because she doesn't really give that much of a crap to deal with some bad person cheating at club tennis. Add in bad person parents with cheating kids and it gets intense pretty quick some times. Life lessons I guess.

Kids seeing how other kids cheat, how parents will cheat/make excuses for their kids, and how to effectively respond to that and not let it negatively affect yourself is a great life lesson because it is something that will for sure happen again.

Oh for sure, but also you hope the have an opposite experience with a good kid and both really feel the true spirit of competition. When you play against someone who is as honest as they can be, it's next level positivity.

But yeah, having to learn the negative side, and handle it is big. Lots of people will cheat, and lots of people will also negatively experience it happening to them.

I have been at the most rinky dink club level tennis matches and seen it. I wish it weren't so, but the more you impress upon your kid that the real lesson is bigger than the stupid point or game or match the better.

Didn't know that was such a thing. What sport do you think has the least crazy parents? I can't decide.

In my experience football are least crazy. Could be because of physical distance between themselves and the field of play. Also furthest distance from being an individual sport.

Yep, it's also funny seeing the kid doing it and then I can look and point out the parent almost immediately. Agree that it is a good less, but it really sucks. My daughter just doesn't care enough and just likes to play so it frustrates her. She can't fathom why someone would cheat at her low level tennis match. Every once in a while she will fight through it and get pissed and just dominate and it makes me happy.

Cross country parents seem very laid back. They clap for everyone and a lot of times the last runner gets as much applause as the first. You can't really complain about refs or playing time because it is hard to argue with the clock. Also, you can get up and move wherever you want on the course.

Oh cross country it is for sure. My two older ones have both run and the races are so encouraging and friendly. There's usually one Dad who is on their kid but the rest of us normals just roll our eyes to each other looking at that dork.

Concur, when I ran in middle school (lol so long ago) every event I went to it felt encouraging the entire time, only once do I remember seeing someone get on someone else but it was more like "Come on they're gaining on you, you can do it" kinda vibe.

Also feel like this translates well to adult running too, everyone encourages everyone on the course, probably the only thing you have practically everyone doing that.

Regarding a tennis opponent making a questionable call, I tell my kid that "those sorts of things average out over the course of the match," etc. Then, after seeing my kid visibly react to a bad call from his opponent, I swear I'll see him intentionally make a bad call of his own against his opponent. Like a makeup call. Which isn't really what I meant by "average out." But I also don't hate that he does it.

What is the equivalent of beaning a batter in baseball for tennis? Kid calls out an obvious ball that was in and next set you put a piss missile in his nuts on a contested ball at the net?
