Just think how butthurt the taters would be if ku hired oscar weber, probably worth it just for the kitten tears.

I would love it and immediately start paying 34% more attention to college basketball.

ben ji, never think that just because clams and I once didn't want to share a cab with you, that you're not a hero.

If I've mixed up you and benja again or someone else entirely, never mind.

IIRC clams threw me in a cab and gave them my hotel address while I was overserved so I appreciate that. #chicago #potatoe/potato

That's Hayden High School legend Mark Turgeon, you are speaking of.  A Topeka HS basketball hero and part of Larry Brown's first recruiting class. Legend has it that Larry gave Turgeon a "one year shot" to earn his spot for future years. Oh man, would this guy pack the building with Beak 'em Hawks sweatshirts or what!?!?!

pollard has a bit of dirt because he's an open pot smoker and because he let the morrises use his car to take some 15yr old girls around lawrence but i could be talked into seeing him join coach hass on the sidelines as well

It's ironic that in Lawrence that Pollard carries more baggage for smoking pot than he ever did for giving that SUV to one of the Morris twins (then used to party with teen girls below the age of consent).

Heir apparent is Mark Turgeon.  Very few crimson and blue faithful would object to his hire.

Ben Meseke was Mark's high school coach.  He told the story at a coaches clinic that Larry asked Mark why he should recruit him, and Mark said without hesitation,  "Because I am  better than anyone you got on the team right now."

I have heard that same story straight from Ben Meske too!  I am a veteran attendee of many a summer camp in the 80's at Haden.

In 20+ years as a head coach, the Turg has two Sweet 16 appearances (including 1 in 9 years at a pretty good program in Maryland). I'm not sure the KU fanbase would been keen for even a home-grown coach who's never done anything truly significant in 20+ years.

If the NCAA slaps him with sanctions don't they kind of have to?

Nah, he'll jump ship before they're forced to take action if things head that way.

Only if they give him a show cause. They can withstand a year long suspension, especially if they have a corresponding postseason ban. Self suspendst for a year or even two is much better than whatever else they could get otherwise.

Yeah, unfortunately we may not get the Kansas University coaching search that we all want.  This upcoming season would be the absolute perfect time time just eat it and take a huge one year suspension.

Would ku - or any university for that matter - have the stones to preemptively fire their coach the season immediately following a national championship? history awaits...

KU should announce its own preemptive sanctions banning Self from team activities for 2020-21 and forfeiting any and all 2021 postseason bids. I'd bet the NCAA would call it even.

They should at least be talking to them about making this deal.

Yeah, but this is the KU AD we're talking about. The only group of people who like the decisions the KU AD makes are the people in the KU AD.

Seriously, go to any of their boards. They're already starting to turn on Long and he's been on the job for what... two years?

I expect KU to fall into the trap of believing the program is bigger than the coach. They will look at how they didn't miss a beat losing Roy, Ohio State football didn't miss a beat losing Tressell, and believe that they will easily be able to hire another basketball coach who wins the Big 12 pretty much every year and isn't also a national disgrace and embarrassment to their program.

they could be right.  The number of programs that give even a small crap about this sport is dwindling so getting a top level coach and recruits gets easier, not harder.  I would think it's worth the risk versus the reputation as the dirtiest school playing the sport.

I doubt they get someone as good as Bill Self immediately, but they won't stay down for more than a few years. Their worst case is the brief walk through the wilderness that Kentucky took.

Yeah, they bounced right back and are as good as ever. They just had to live with a couple of Billy Clyde years.
