TITLETOWN - A Decade Long Celebration Of The Greatest Achievement In College Athletics History => Jerome Tang Coaches Kansas State Basketball => Topic started by: Pete on May 07, 2020, 05:49:19 PM

Now that it's becoming clearer that the NCAA has no intention of allowing Bill Self to coach in college basketball for the foreseeable future, it's time to turn our sights toward the next regime.
Who do you guys got?
-
I'll vote with my heart.

I had a few classes in grad school with him. Man, was he prepared!
-
i’d bet they go with quin snyder
-
By some miracle, Danny Manning got tons of free time.
-
i really hope jeff long does another espn+ show for the hiring and onboarding of coach hasse

UNPOPULAR OPINION: I could be talked into Scott Pollard.
-
pollard has a bit of dirt because he's an open pot smoker and because he let the morrises use his car to take some 15yr old girls around lawrence but i could be talked into seeing him join coach hass on the sidelines as well
-
oscar has experience in taking over for Seff. :dunno:
-
Long is a wildcard, he might somehow eff this up. I think they can basically have any non blue blood coach they want.
-
Frank Haith
-
They should irl hire Barnes.

Loved this book in middle school!
-
Bring back Jacque! (serious suggestion)
-
Beilein. Known for being squeaky clean. KU could stomach that for the few years he'd have before he retired as a transition to the next dirty coach.
-
if that is your criteria, then oscar is clearly their guy

Saw a poll of college coaches picking the coach most likely not to cheat. Oscar was in the top 10, but Beilein won by a mile. He's also doesn't finish last in his conference.

I would absolutely lose my crap.

All this oscar pearl talk reminded me of when he responded to a random email I sent him after frank left.
oscar-
I came across a job opening the other day that I think would be perfect for you! As I am sure you are aware Kansas State University now has a vacancy for their position as head basketball coach for their men's program.
With your history of success at Milwaukee and the University of Tennessee you would be a perfect fit here. To top it all of your good buddy from your days at rocky top, John Currie, is now the Athletic Director at Kansas State.
I look forward to seeing you in purple body paint soon!

Wait, so oscar was working for this H.T. Hackney company?

Yeah, he had some cush VP job with them while serving his show cause.
-
ben ji, never think that just because clams and I once didn't want to share a cab with you, that you're not a hero.
If I've mixed up you and benja again or someone else entirely, never mind.
-
Just think how butthurt the taters would be if ku hired oscar weber, probably worth it just for the kitten tears.
-
Hell, I'll just float who we are all thinking ... Frank.

I would love it and immediately start paying 34% more attention to college basketball.

IIRC clams threw me in a cab and gave them my hotel address while I was overserved so I appreciate that. #chicago #potatoe/potato

That's Hayden High School legend Mark Turgeon, you are speaking of. A Topeka HS basketball hero and part of Larry Brown's first recruiting class. Legend has it that Larry gave Turgeon a "one year shot" to earn his spot for future years. Oh man, would this guy pack the building with Beak 'em Hawks sweatshirts or what!?!?!
-

It's ironic that in Lawrence that Pollard carries more baggage for smoking pot than he ever did for giving that SUV to one of the Morris twins (then used to party with teen girls below the age of consent).
Heir apparent is Mark Turgeon. Very few crimson and blue faithful would object to his hire.

And fewer Terrapin fans.

Guys, they're not going to fire Self.

Ben Meseke was Mark's high school coach. He told the story at a coaches clinic that Larry asked Mark why he should recruit him, and Mark said without hesitation, "Because I am better than anyone you got on the team right now."

I have heard that same story straight from Ben Meske too! I am a veteran attendee of many a summer camp in the 80's at Haden.

In 20+ years as a head coach, the Turg has two Sweet 16 appearances (including 1 in 9 years at a pretty good program in Maryland). I'm not sure the KU fanbase would been keen for even a home-grown coach who's never done anything truly significant in 20+ years.
-
Guys, they're not going to fire Self.
If the NCAA slaps him with sanctions don't they kind of have to?
Nah, he'll jump ship before they're forced to take action if things head that way.
-
Guys, they're not going to fire Self.

Only if they give him a show cause. They can withstand a year long suspension, especially if they have a corresponding postseason ban. Self suspendst for a year or even two is much better than whatever else they could get otherwise.
-
Yeah, unfortunately we may not get the Kansas University coaching search that we all want. This upcoming season would be the absolute perfect time time just eat it and take a huge one year suspension.

Yup. Put it on ice. See you next year. Etc.
-
Would ku - or any university for that matter - have the stones to preemptively fire their coach the season immediately following a national championship? history awaits...
-
KU should announce its own preemptive sanctions banning Self from team activities for 2020-21 and forfeiting any and all 2021 postseason bids. I'd bet the NCAA would call it even.

They should at least be talking to them about making this deal.
-
If I’m the NCAA I take that deal and run as fast as I can.
-
Yeah, but this is the KU AD we're talking about. The only group of people who like the decisions the KU AD makes are the people in the KU AD.
Seriously, go to any of their boards. They're already starting to turn on Long and he's been on the job for what... two years?
-
they said he was a perfect, homerun hire... :frown:
-
I expect KU to fall into the trap of believing the program is bigger than the coach. They will look at how they didn't miss a beat losing Roy, Ohio State football didn't miss a beat losing Tressell, and believe that they will easily be able to hire another basketball coach who wins the Big 12 pretty much every year and isn't also a national disgrace and embarrassment to their program.

they could be right. The number of programs that give even a small crap about this sport is dwindling so getting a top level coach and recruits gets easier, not harder. I would think it's worth the risk versus the reputation as the dirtiest school playing the sport.
-
I doubt they get someone as good as Bill Self immediately, but they won't stay down for more than a few years. Their worst case is the brief walk through the wilderness that Kentucky took.

I guess - except Kentucky has won a ton of nattys

Yeah, they bounced right back and are as good as ever. They just had to live with a couple of Billy Clyde years.
-
Jeff boschee, will spradling as grad assistant
-
Wayne Simeon is still on staff I think.

Gotta forfeit some scholarships, too.

Gary Parrish thinks the NCAA may hammer Kansas University, based on what they did to Oklahoma State.

Does Bill Self love Kansas enough to endure heavy penalties, rather than move on to the NBA?!?! :ohno:
-
Personally, I don't think Self is interested in coaching in the NBA. I also don't think he's the "coach til you die" type. He might just call it a career.

Ah, he's gonna do the ol' Bob Stoops move! Always a classic.
-
Well we know self is a maniacal liar. So anything is on the table.

I really would like to see what Self could do with an NBA team. New Orleans maybe? Giving Zion the business for choosing Nike instead of Adidas and those sorts of things.
-
I always thought OKC but with Billy D there now, that seems unlikely

Dollar Bill understands that money talks
-
I feel like he has been holding out for any of the Duke/UNC/Kentucky job
-
How old is Roy? I can't imagine a more entertaining thing to happen in a coaching search that isn't being run by John Currie.
But really, him and Billy D should just switch spots. At least, they should have before KU wasn't allowed to have any scholarships for 4 years.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/watch-michigans-juwan-howard-ejected-after-dust-up-with-marylands-mark-turgeon-in-big-ten-tournament/
This will probably further endear Turgeon to some, and make others bristle, but in either case I kinda think Turgeon is is a leading candidate to take over a heavily penalized KU team.
-
they should hire rick barnes
-
We should hire Jalen Rose.

WOULD TAKE. Gottleib as an assistant?
