awful, this is a terrible disease.  :frown:

Quote
Excess deaths haven’t been evenly distributed among the U.S. population either, with The National Cancer Institute finding that roughly 2.9 million people died in the U.S. between March 1 and Dec. 21, 2020; 74 percent of them were due to COVID-19 with 477,200 identified excess deaths.

After adjusting for age, the number of excess deaths among Black, American Indian/Alaska Native and Latino men and women were more than double those in white and Asian men and women.

“It is possible that fear of seeking out health care during the pandemic or misattribution of causes of death from COVID-19 are responsible for a majority of the excess non-COVID-19 deaths,” said Meredith S. Sheils, a senior investigator in the Infections and Immunoepidemiology Branch of the National Cancer Institute.

the us should also end all covid restrictions.  there's not much point anymore.

i don't think it'd solve everything, or even much.  a lot of the lack of normalcy is due to the virus itself, or by individuals reacting to the virus, absent any regulation or recommendation.

but i think it'd help a bit.  and i don't think the remaining restrictions and guidelines serve any purpose that outweighs the disruption they cause.

I still hope to not get covid, and I’d like you people’s assistance in that endeavor.

I think now any restrictions that are left are mostly inconsequential virtue signals to lefties that would be pretty damaging politically for any leader that removes them. And for the most part, they aren't disruptive, so there really isn't much of an incentive to end them. I suppose the exception to this might be masks in schools in red states but I don't know how prominent they are.

Still, broader vaccine mandates might be worth the disruption if it makes the next variant spike smaller.

i guess some of the local-level mandates for govt employees are still intact, but otherwise, afaik, there aren't any govt vaccine mandates surviving in the united states?

I suppose they aren't exactly mandates but there are vaccine requirements for indoor dining and events in tons of places.

But I think something like requiring a vaccine for domestic air travel would get a bunch of folks vaxxed pretty quickly.

Kids should be able to go to school without masks

a funny thing that happens at our baseball practices is one of the kids will randomly get dropped off with a mask on and wear it throughout practice. don't ask, don't tell is apparently just an informal policy because nobody bats and eye and I just try to keep a little extra distance from kid who wears a mask for a week. has happened with two different kids over the last couple weeks and one coach. coach was obviously like, "got covid in our house". and everyone is all "cool, cool, no biggie" and just doesn't stand right next to him.

For sure this is the norm.  If I can party rock at arrowhead and scream like a drunk sex symbol with no mask my 5 year old should be able to go to kindergarten without one

I don’t know how I missed but numerous studies from SA and Israel to name a few said Omicron pretty much gave no shits about 3.0 (or even 4.0) booster and prelim info on actual boutique Omicron booster, not great.

In a perfect world mask use in schools would be based on community transmission rates for Covid and flu. But I think there's too many parents on either side for that to be feasible because anything other than the current status quo would cause people on either side to flip the eff out. I don't think many kids give a crap either way.

Nothing in the pandemic pissed me off more than bars opening before in-person schools in California last year.

Thanks for bringing up a different statistical measurement as usual.
