So what stage are we in now? Is the pandemic essentially over come spring and it’s just an annual shot like the flu shot going forward? I assume it can’t just keep stacking 500k bodies a year into perpetuity.

We're in the stage where omicron is spiking in some of the country and subsiding in others.

Who knows what it will be like moving forward, omicron definitely brought up new challenges that I don't think anyone of note really predicted. Still, I'd guess that to 95% of the country, this is over and their lives won't be affected again significantly.

Like for you specifically, wetwillie, is Covid impacting your life in any meaningful way right now?

It is stupid to pretend like COVID isn't still meaningfully impacting people's lives even if they are vaccinated.  Come on.

But how, specifically? I haven't been to Kansas since the summer and it wasn't impacting anyone and when I talk to my folks it doesn't seem to be impacting anyone. I can do pretty much anything you could do pre-pandemic in NYC. It was stressful to have a kid home for ten days but that could have happened with the flu in before times.

Kids quarantining, daycares shutting down, masks for work and kids, wife remote most of the time, precarity of travel plans, having unfilled absences/positions at my job (mostly directly related to COVID, but some related to just people wanting better jobs) so that other people have to pick up the slack etc.

I'm sure if you are old and retired or farm that life didn't even really change in 2020, other than everything being closed for a couple of months and having to say "I appreciate the suggestion" whenever someone asked you to wear a mask.

not accurate. a lot of rural hospitals have been overwhelmed pretty much consistently since the pandemic started. they don't have a lot of excess capacity to begin with and can't ramp up to the extent larger medical groups can.

There will definitely be a higher cancer rate among those who are not vaccinated. It will be pretty difficult to determine whether that is because of a previous covid infection or living an unhealthy lifestyle, though.
