Yeah, I am staying in until this omicron wave passes. I don't want the future heart and brain disorders that all of the people who contracted COVID are going to have.

then we're all going to have those same disorders and we'll be on the same level

Looks like only a handful of states haven't seen their downturn start

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html

After I test negative today it will be back to not impacting my life at all much like since I got my vaccine.  Life around me as definitely changed so that's impactful (closed restaurants, empty office, PITA travel requirements)

I thought I saw on Twitter that cases are still climbing in Kansas. At work we're still seeing a positivity rate of 20%. I've cut out happy hour and eating out as a result.

yeah KS was one of the handful.  Think I saw Kentucky too.

Some of us haven't had it yet. Plus, I doubt 100% of the cases end up with brain AIDS, but maybe that happens. We just don't know.

what is out there that makes you think brain AIDS is anywhere close to a widespread problem that everybody that has been infected needs to worry about?

So what stage are we in now? Is the pandemic essentially over come spring and it’s just an annual shot like the flu shot going forward? I assume it can’t just keep stacking 500k bodies a year into perpetuity.
We're in the stage where omicron is spiking in some of the country and subsiding in others.

Who knows what it will be like moving forward, omicron definitely brought up new challenges that I don't think anyone of note really predicted. Still, I'd guess that to 95% of the country, this is over and their lives won't be affected again significantly.

Like for you specifically, wetwillie, is Covid impacting your life in any meaningful way right now?

It is stupid to pretend like COVID isn't still meaningfully impacting people's lives even if they are vaccinated.  Come on.

But how, specifically? I haven't been to Kansas since the summer and it wasn't impacting anyone and when I talk to my folks it doesn't seem to be impacting anyone. I can do pretty much anything you could do pre-pandemic in NYC. It was stressful to have a kid home for ten days but that could have happened with the flu in before times.

Seems like insurance and doctors should be able to simply not prescribe it for uses where it doesn’t do any good.

doctors, as a group, aren't smart enough to pull that off.

They are glorified pill pushers.  They get bonus money for studies for drugs and really don't give a crap about the subject.

Have been working from home per requirement from company until further notice, which isn’t really a negative.  My mom has auto immune issues and has chosen to not get vaccine for that reason, so I basically get to live the rest of my life hoping I don’t infect her with covid.  Son’s baseball uniforms haven’t come in for 2 months due to covid supply chain stuff but it’s a minor annoyance.  I think for the most part life has gone back to somewhat of a normal routine for me in Kansas anyway.

Yeah that's rough with your mom. Does her doctor recommend she not get the vax?

Spanish Flu survivors were 2-3 times more likely to get Parkinson's. Other viruses linked to brain inflammation (West Nile, HIV, Equine Encephalitis) also can cause Parkinson's later in life. I suspect COVID will also be linked to heart and lung issues like COPD and CHF.

Yea her doctor told her she is probably better off not getting vaccine, she’s a former RN and is well informed on medical issues so she takes really good care of herself and doesn’t have a lot of the comorbidities many people her age do.  The regeneron was a pretty nice safety net since it appeared to be effective against delta.
Hopefully if another nasty strain makes the rounds that will be available again.

Is there really any way to know until way down the line whether this is true for any virus though? I think this is a good reason to practice good hygiene and habits (and a really good reason to scold people who basically get infected on purpose), but I don’t know how you have this type of philosophy without shutting yourself in your home like 3-4 months out of every year.

yeah and I think this kind of applies to ww and his mom. we shouldn't have been going out with a fever/the flu (especially among immunocompromised folks) before and we shouldn't now. I think the biggest difference now vs before is you should get a home test if you have covid symptoms before going around the immunocompromised (or anyone, really)

In short, I think we look at covid like we did the flu pre-pandemic, with a little more caution, awareness, and testing.

I don't think going around the immunocompromised with covid symptoms is a good idea even if you don't have covid. It's not like their immune system is going to be good at fighting off whatever it is you have, regardless.

Yeah, the odds are in your favor. They just aren't nearly as in your favor as they were before you caught COVID.
