Essential business is a very broad definition here. I’ve been thinking about and have heard stuff about these shutdowns. The reason the new normal is so weird to people is because our country was founded on the basic assumption that we are free to do anything, go anywhere, and be anything within the constraints of the current laws. So infringing on that is a very strange idea.

I think this measure is needed to protect the greater portion of society. I even feel very weird about these measures but it isn’t about me, it’s about the health of everyone in our community and country. It sucks but we are all in this together, the good and the bad. In 50 years we will be the old people telling stories of “the first great pandemic”. Pretty crazy.

Chances are that TBT had to travel for work before things were shut down and had to come home, so he was as careful about it as he could be.

I don't quite understand why it's being brought up, is that like in response to people potentially going bat crap insane on each other?

Sean Penn calling for martial law
Martial law is a pretty dirty word, but is there another way the president could institute a nationwide quarantine like some have been calling for?

Given the way our system is structured, though, seems like by far the best course for the federal government is focusing on (1) travel restrictions, (2) more widely available testing, (3) economic relief for citizens, and (4) fast tracking treatment options (without treating people like guinea pigs).

Read about that. The important part is it can be processed on site and does not require special training to perform. Would be pretty sweet if we beat this thing the American way by hard work, innovation, and otherwise doing whatever we like even if it endangers others.

The question is whether this Silicon Valley company has the manufacturing throughput, or the manufacturing partners, to actually scale this ASAP.

This whole thing is rough ridin' nuts. I’m glad these measures are being taken, but it just so strange to anyone under 102 years old.

IMHO it doesn’t matter cause the fed government should make sure that IP is freely available to whomever can produce it.

I heard Manhattan has like four ventilators total?

I dunno but this is our first case. He came back from a study abroad trip in London. Apparently they took all the necessary precautions. Wife and kids are not showing symptoms.

danaher (by vague reputation, no direct experience) is like half huge conglomerate, half cult.  which is probably good in this case.

looking at libx7's link, good old american cozy shelter-in-place and scary china futuristic lockdown don't really produce much difference in outcomes.

lib's models seemed pretty optimistic. Also it might be a scaling issue and the colors they chose were way too close

scale and density.  in ny, it looked like it did make some difference.  in your typical car culture suburbia state not much difference.

don't know how faithfully it assumes people follow the shelter-in-place recommendations/regs.

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Literally. It is the government hysteria over the virus that is growing exponentially - not the virus.

A good example is NY Gov Cuomo’s latest order shuttering all “non-essential” businesses. First, I’m pretty sure each business is “essential” to its owners and employees, but let’s look further to the wise governor’s rationale.

I want to be able to say to the people of New York — I did everything we could do. And if everything we do saves just one life, I’ll be happy.

Yes, and that’s exactly the sort of overreaction we can expect from our elected leaders, but it is not sensible policy. Nor is it moral, to use the latest favored argument, to plunge into another depression to save one or a few lives. It overlooks the disastrous consequences on health and lives that would be caused by economic calamity. And that is where we are headed, not because of the virus, but because of overreacting to the virus.
