You think people going out less in an attempt to slow the spread of a virus is freaking out?

To an extent, absolutely. The long-term economic ramifications of over-reaction will likely be far more devastating than the virus itself. If you’re sick, stay home. If you aren’t, practice clean habits. I’m not saying you need to go to cesspools like buffets, but you can keep going to restaurants and stores. This isn’t that hard. Use common sense. It’s the same way you stay healthy in general over the winter.

For real, people need to get a grip.

Ok here is my rant that most people on this blogsite don't need to hear and you won't care about:

The last figure I saw showed that only about 20% of people who get COVID-19 will need to be hospitalized.  If that 20% require hospitalization around the same time, the healthcare system will not be able to treat all of them effectively.  As a result, some will die that otherwise could have survived.  It's not something that is necessarily trackable, but nationwide those preventable deaths will be a pretty big number.  Statewide a little smaller, citywide even smaller, and within your local community you might only hear about a few people.  But even then, if I can prevent even one death by breaking from my usual routine I'll do it. Even if it hurts the local economy.  My word, how many conservatives keep insisting on adding billions to the federal deficit in military spending in the name of "protecting American citizens" when this type of a pandemic if left unchecked could kill more U.S. citizens than any of our military engagements?

Statistically, you can be sure that those numbers are being driven down by those practicing social distancing.  The thing is, we may never know what that benefit is from the folks who are doing their part to drive down the number of deaths due to COVID-19.  No matter where this ends up, the people complaining about "freaking out" will say they were right, and they will take zero responsibility for the deaths due to overcrowded hospitals because they were taking precautions and never had a cough.

So what would you estimate the number of QALYs to be that will be saved through all of these actions?

Seriously, the folks posting actions taken by government officials in response to hysteria as proof that the hysteria is justified is pretty incredible. But then, I guess Bernie Sanders was almost a thing for a while so there are a lot of crazy people out there.

Maybe we should just let people decide. If you want to huddle in your cave with your 196 rolls of charmin, that’s cool. Shutting down private businesses doesn’t seem legal or wise. I’m laughing at you hysterical little girls.

This is the same state where the previous governor’s adult daughter was living in an RV in the back yard hooked up to state paid utilities. When asked if she was reimbursing the state for her daughter’s expenses she got mad and called it an attack on family values. We’re pretty stupid.

3% mortality rate!  Ha!  People using that as a mortality rate are either clueless or fear mongering.  It is much more likely that the mortality rate is 0.5% than it is 3%.

Moreover, there is no adjustment for age of death in those statistics.  Again either as a result of someone who is clueless or a fear mongerer.

I mean, there are a bunch of uncertainties, but I think we have a pretty good handle on the transmission rate and that the number of serious cases that involve hospitalization is ~15% and of those 5% require respirators.  There is obviously a bunch more uncertainty about how this will play out in the US because we have done basically no testing.  If you are right, then the UK will come out of this much better than the US because they are basically using the "develop herd immunity" playbook and just letting the disease run its course.  I guess we will see if that is the right approach or not.

Again, if you want to live in a cave, go ahead. Stop shuttering businesses. Just because you dumbasses are behaving like scared little girls doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be able to go out to eat. I went skiing yesterday and it was amazingly low crowds - until the ducking governor closed the resorts today. Now there are no crowds.

Again do you have evidence that we shouldn't be concerned about this? I'd love to see something from the last two days that says we should just go about our normal business

Everything I've seen suggests the case fatality rate (CFR) is probably around 1%, though it could be a bit lower.

When you say we'll see who comes out better, we have to adjust for QALYs saved, QALYs lost (due to increased suicides, depression, etc.) and economic cost incurred.
