I saw some millennial coworkers sharing bar-hopping on instagram and I sent them a message telling them they shouldn't be hitting up the bars. They might not think I'm as cool when we come back to the office. :frown:

that wapo simulation was really cool.

it's a fine line between trying to impress on others how important social distancing behaviors are and being unrealistic and unproductively judgemental.  my father and siblings are liberal as eff and most of them aren't taking this as seriously as i think they should.  neither is my wife, for that matter.  and just two weeks ago i effectively lost a shitload of money because i didn't foresee the scale or economic impacts of the pandemic.

ELI5 to me how this and H1N1 differed as it rolled out around the world and we didn't cancel anything?

this one is like 20-150 times more lethal.

It was easy to browse Twitter and dismiss articles freaking out about it because people often get way too outraged about things for clicks. I certainly took it less seriously than I probably should have.

And I actually used your line about the fine line with my coworker tonight. It's true.

As someone who has two at-risk parents (one extremely so) and an at-risk sibling that lives with them, I have had my eye on this for awhile. They committed today to staying home entirely for the foreseeable future and I have committed to bringing them all of their basic needs and minimizing my interaction with them. Does this seem reasonable? I think so.

Yes you are doing great, but you also need to limit your own interactions with other people. Like only go out to get stuff they need.

Does it also spread easier?  Spread more with asymptotic people?

Looking at the H1N1 stats it looks like a lot of people got it and a lot of people died but I don't remember doing crap different in my life in 2009.

looks like a little bit, 1.5ish for h1n1 compared to 2.2ish for covid19.

Flying today I can also say there was a weird energy in the air, much more so than earlier this week. People that have even a small percentage of common sense and brainpower understand the gravity of this.

I have no medical expertise but I’ve read a crap load of articles and stuff the past few months. I think I posted a /dataisbeautiful chart once but Russia has a generational gap because of either WWI or WWII people dying. We will have a similar mass old people die off and also a big baby boom in 9 months.

I just don’t understand how you can trust these crap for brains Trump people telling us everything is ok. It’s not ok. This is a big rough ridin' deal and we are setting ourselves up for a major rough ridin' disaster.

What also sucks is there are two groups of people that are going to get hit EXTREMELY hard by this. Old people(obviously) but also people that live paycheck to paycheck. Most paycheck to paycheck people don’t have good insurance, if any.

The very lucky among us that can work from home and don’t have to stress week to week will be fine. That doesn’t preclude us from feeling for those most impacted by this. Several times in my life I’ve been literally down to less than $10 in my account for more than a day.

I can’t imagine what this stress wise is going to do to these people who are legit trying but have no other options. I guess I have a lot of empathy because I’ve been there. Instead of people mocking other people who legitimately want to make peoples lives better, even tho they were some dumb bartender previously, as if everyone in a place of power is born into it.

The government needs to pass a nationwide UBI immediately

While I’m not opposed to this, I don’t want to shift gears for this thread too much. If done in the right way it would be good, but given how our current USD money system works it would lead to runaway inflation. Do we have a thread for this?

They live in Lenexa, but my grandparents live on a farm in the flint hills. My bro? Former track alternate for the US team in Louisiana. He’s been down there for about 20+ years now and is eating up the South talk. He’s conservative AF!

Just got out to the farm and am posting up here indefinitely. Brother is coming out tomorrow and sister may be joining.

Had dinner with my parents on Friday night and I don't think they grasp the situation. I told my mom she needs to head out to the farm with my dad when he comes back on Wednesday if not sooner. She hates the farm and says she is not worried because not many people have tested positive yet....told her no crap because no one is getting tested.

She was shocked when I told her the community center that she goes to daily for workout classes will be closed anytime.

Also my brother is essentially unemployed now since him and his buddies have a company that does parking/event management for music festivals.

Luckily he is a vagabond and doesnt have a mortgage or any debt so I guess thats a plus in a situation like this?

Benji I think it's great that you're taking it seriously but I don't know how much going to the farm helps unless you want to possibly speed the spread near the farm (unless you all can completely hole up there).

However if that's what it takes to keep your parents from going out and living their normal life it's probably the right thing
