Just glancing at the graphic, it tells me that the vast majority of our testing is still being done on the hospital doorstep.

The alternative explanation is that infection rate hasn’t slowed but either (1) the virus has become less severe, or (2) more people are just opting to suffer at home instead. I still think the first thing is most likely though.

Captain Obvious point of the day, the virus is going to continue mutating, so we're likely never going to get to a vaccine that's 100%.

So as I said earlier, therapeutics to mitigate systems should and hopefully are getting more funding and research than the vaccine.    Capable mitigation enables faster reopening.

Pathogens can also evolve resistance to small molecule therapeutics just as easily as biologics. Mitigation doesn't shift the highest risk groups (i.e. immunocompromised) out of danger. A possible vaccine is still preferable to any small molecule therapeutic.
Speaking strictly in terms of getting things opened.

The economic problems are on the cusp of causing more problems than the virus itself.  We’re not going to eradicate this virus, and they’ll be no chance of coming close without an economic engine to support the process.

The way you do that RIGHT NOW is to rapidly expand testing capabilities and implement contact tracing, because any new therapy or vaccine is going to have to go through clinical trials prior to FDA approval and that's going to take 4-6 months in a best case scenario.

The testing won't expand quickly enough, and please don't insult me with the comparisons to other countries unless you are very succinctly including discussion of:  Demographics, International points of entry-common International borders, land mass, homogeneity, and population size/density.

Thank the FSM that Bama isn't in the states where guys are trying to blow-up Hospitals because of Covid-19, and the Religious Taliban of Brownbeckistan is trying to force the Governor to allow Covid-19 laden church services to carry on.  With several members not on state wide quarantines and who just rolled out drive thru testing a week or two ago like a bunch of 3rd worlders.

Unexpected coronavirus impact: Plastic bags in California grocery stores since reusable bags are banned and I'm guessing that was a major hit to paper bag supply. I don't think I've seen plastic grocery store bags here in like five years

So is the new incel talking point to blame this wholly on china?  and if so, to what end?  Be super war thirsty and fight them?  Cancel our debt?

just spitballing but it seems to be the super old/impotent and stupid position now.  I bet it is widely held in the poorest/fattest and dumbest states.

yeah trying to nail down China so we have a fall guy doesn't seem like a productive use of resources

cRusty, please document the resources that will be expanded, and while you're at it, please pass me another defective Chinese produced mask.

The president and secretary of state are usually valuable resources but I get your point given our current people in those positions.

Firing up people to blame China to what end as was asked earlier?  Nationalism?
If a Chinese fuckup led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people across the globe, isn't that worth at least knowing?

Let's assume they screwed up (they likely did) and then played Trump like a total and complete rube (he is) then what?
If this thing emanated from a Chinese lab and China lied about it as the world struggled to deal with it? I don’t know what “then what” is.  I’m not suggesting “this means war” at all. But I’d be pretty pissed to learn some lab fuckup on the other side of the world has lead to all of everything -- especially if CCP was covering up the true origin.

I have no clue where this thing came from, and like I said, right now I'm way more concerned about the management of the crisis.  But eventually I'd like to know whether this was all because of some ill-fated pangolin or if it’s because some dufus screwed-up in Wuhan’s NBAF.

tentatively positive news.

Just about to post this.  This would be great news, but apparently needs to be administered by IV and is pretty expensive, which isn't super convenient.

Anyway, this would be great.  Hard to tell how effective it is without a control though.

yeah.  i believe the other caveat is there are already lots of patient being given this on an off-label basis.  so it's not quite status quo, but it isn't a sea change either.

i wish we had politicians in the us talking about r.  i'm kinda at the point where any reopening plan that doesn't talk give current r, target r, contributions of each economically restrictive measure to reducing r and measures to further reduce r if measured r exceeds targets is just some bullshit.

does anywhere in the US have the testing capacity to accurately estimate R0? I know Cuomo said they were under 1 today.

i would think so, yeah.  i've seen estimates for the uk, and they're testing less than we are.  i'm sure there are people generating estimates of r for the us, we just don't seem to be talking about them much and if we're using them to direct policy (i'm sure we are at some level), it isn't being communicated.

What’s the excuse for the talking heads?

Likely that they weren’t doing anything anyways but I see a little “other countries aren’t paying their fair share” and I’m hoping “they aren’t essential anyways, it’s safer”

That the who is a chinese puppet

Interesting timing to post such a thing.... Jan. 16, 2019

 gonna need some help with this one. What's interesting about the timing, or frankly the content of this?

I think that's the answer right now. Anyone who could intelligently investigate Chinese mistakes leading to virus spread should probably be put to use investigating/understanding/coming up with solutions for current domestic virus spread.
I agree that the origin isn't a priority right now.  All I'm saying is that I think the world eventually deserves an answer as to how this episode actually began.

This is important so we can use science to try to learn from this in the future and not so we can exact some kind of revenge, right?

Think about WHY this site was created in the first place...  Insiders or as we called them “people ITK” were able to get inside info about K-State football that the “real reporters” couldn’t get because the entire narrative was controlled within Vanier Sports Complex.

While we all enjoyed knowing facts about our favorite team, those that enjoyed the public narrative hung out at GPC and called us all sorts of names because we didn’t toe the line.  Remember?   Well, guess what? The EXACT SAME THING is happening  now, only on a much larger scale.

I don't recall this being the reason why this site was created in the first place.

Fair point... However I stand by the rest of the post.

If during the creation of this site someone posted a bunch of crackpot tweets from KU fans dissecting how overrated Michael Beasley was, they'd be roundly mocked too. Mockery of every single unintelligent thing ever said can't be chalked up to groupthink.

https://telegra.ph/The-Factory-Fires-in-China-And-Why-They-Are-Worth-Looking-Into-04-11

So, why are there so many fires in China? This question is brought up to me daily...lets look at the facts. Firstly, these factories that have almost no people inside and very little roadside panic. I honestly get more of a spectator feel from the bystanders rather than a sense of panic or loss and I very rarely hear or see a fire brigade near any of these fires. I have been on contact with some people that live in the areas thereof via WeChat and they all confirm nothing has beem reported on the local news about the fires to date. Most often people wonder what is in these factories? Netizens in China have made claims that the fires are to cover the number of dead, also Chinese Netizens say that they are quarantined sites that would arouse too much suspicion with the locals if they were sanitized and would undoubtedly be posted on twitter by Harry Chen PhD or others like me. Some lesser theories include using the abandoned factories as a diversionary tactic...But, what I find interesting is that the concept of burning and retreating isn’t considered, upon investigation Chinese netizens claim that several of the factories are insured by American insurance firms and/or are key component manufacturing facilities that are vital to the maintenance of western infrastructure that could not be produced elsewhere so quickly. If you know Chinese military strategy and history you would know the idea of burning bridges is far from foreign and is extremely plausible especially if there is foreign money to be gained because a factory owner could become a Party hero by lighting the blaze for the glory
