It just always seemed inevitable that this would mutate into a typical, highly transmittable but low fatality coronavirus.

not only is it not inevitable that it will evolve to become more transmittable and less lethal, there's no reason to think it will (at least not less lethal).

there is good reason to think it will impact us much less when everyone either gets it or is vaccinated as a child.

I thought the reason to assume lower lethality was just rooted in natural selection. Any mutation of a virus is going to become more prevalent if it doesn’t knock its hosts on their asses.

Everything I’ve ever heard about viruses, is as they become more transmissible they necessarily become less virulent/lethal.

If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Dr Z had some helpful things to say about omicron - (cliffs: get vaccinated if you aren't already, too soon to tell what the significant is in terms of the variant avoiding vaccines / therapeutics, and don't punish poor countries for a variant that is already everywhere):

A) agree with those cliff notes points entirely
B) no way in hell I'm clicking on some click baity looking ass video like that no matter who or what the content is

Yeah, nothing about that screen cap says, please take me seriously as a doctor. crap looks like a low budget horror film.

it's an old hypothesis which hasn't been well supported by data.

in the case of covid 19, transmission typically occurs early after infection, usually while the host is presymptomatic or just starting to evidence symptoms.  by the time a host experiences severe symptoms (if they do), they are no longer infectious or nearly so.  there isn't much selection pressure on what happens to the host after transmission ceases.

Scott G has mentioned this as something that happens numerous times. And since he is the A-1 on Covid 19 I think it’s irl.

I always heard that in comparing Covid to SARS but Covid has always seemed to be in the sweet spot of spreading like crazy while killing a bunch of people already. SARS killed people too quickly for it to spread effectively and I don't think Covid has killed off nearly enough people to mutate into a weaker version.

I could be spinning anecdotes though

I'd like to believe that most people aren't dumb enough to blame the country that a virus or mutation originated from anyway, but unfortunately, that isn't true.

Does the Biden administration see the same info about omicron and Southern Africa that everyone else is seeing? Why only do they need information for travelers this from travelers from that specific region? Omicron is everywhere, what's about the other 30 countries that have cases? Sounds kinda r***st.

First *detected* Omicron case has been identified in California, although we all know it was already here.

The patient actually did just arrive from South Africa AND was vaccinated, though not boosted, according to Dr. Fauci.
