pfizer ceo on cnbc now saying that they don't know that their vaccine will be 95% like it is against og covid but he'd be very surprised if the effectiveness was low. 85 days to get a new vaccine ready if it's needed, already made the template for it. reiterated that even if the og vax doesn't provide high levels of protection from omicron sickness he is hopeful (confident?) it should keep people out of the hospital.

Aren’t we still really short on evidence that this strain is actually dangerous? At what point are we just tracking the nu common cold?

Not that I’m opposed to the drug nerds getting a head start on this. It just always seemed inevitable that this would mutate into a typical, highly transmittable but low fatality coronavirus.

I think it will be higher than historic flu shot rates in non-maga communities and lower than historic flu shot rates in maga communities. (and sadly flu shot rates will probably go down in maga communities)

I was always shocked at how many people just didn't get flu-shots pre-pandemic. Like it's free and they come to our office!!?!? Let's go get one you dummies!!! But I know like 90% of those folks got vaxxed and will likely get boosters.

I've had people refuse flu vaccines who always got them pre-COVID. One person sounded like they had been consuming some misinformation that flu vaccines are now "contaminated with COVID vaccine."

I'm holding out optimism that once pretty much everyone has been either vaxxed or infected COVID won't be that virulent and routine boosters won't be needed.

Also holding out optimism that some genius will figure out a way to make a universal, one-and-done flu vaccine.

I was listening to a pod with Gottleib a few weeks ago and he speculated that COVID is going to be like a really bad flu season that kills like 80K every year for the next few years as we go into the endemic phase, FWIW. Hopefully, they can formulate a booster soon that lasts for 5 - 10 years (or life) and doesn't allow severe breakthru infections in most people.

South African doctor who noted early omicron cases reports that symptoms were very mild. Again, too soon to tell but a very contagious variant that produces very mild symptoms but still induces long-lasting immunity from more severe strains would be really great news.
