I make my own in an olde timey hand crank ice cream freezer.  Gives my Popeyesque forearms to go with my ice cream gut.  The ladies dig it.
Why do old timers think that home made ice cream is the cats pajamas?

Seriously, it sucks.  Your hand cranked crap sucks.  It's grainy, or it's runny, or it is just flat out boring.  Who wants vanilla? Oh boy. I don't give a crap.  I have never had a home made ice cream that can even hold a candle to store bought Breyers, Edy's, or ffs, Blue Bunny...and i've been to a lot of midwestern summer potluck fare gatherings.

http://blogs.houstonpress.com/eating/2010/06/why_you_should_buy_an_ice_crea.php#more

boom. roasted.
Breyers has no artificial flavors/preservatives/stabilizers, plus it doesn't taste like ice chips.

Perhaps if these old fart dumbasses could learn how to make ice cream in an ice cream maker it would be better, but they don't.

Oh, and like I said before, their favorite flavor is always vanilla. GMAFB.

I get you now, you're saying the old people who hand crank at parties you've been to.  Cause while bryers does have no artificial flavors, I can assure you they aren't using the best flavors out there. And like the article said, you can make it creamier, add liquor, more particulates, whatever you'd like when you make it at home. But I agree with you, you have to know what you are doing.

Yeah, gotta know what you are doing, where most people don't. Same thing goes with home brewed beer.  Hardly worth the hassle, just go out and buy and enjoy other peoples efforts instead of endless toiling and experimenting.

so i went last night to Glace.  it's on Main St right next to the Spin and just a couple doors north of the Peanut.

i got there around 8:45, just after putting down a Chipotle burrito for dinner and there was a line about 15-20 people deep.  they have some weird flavors.  i went with a combo of venezualan dark chocolate and vanilla bean.  the crap is great and i'm a ice cream snob.  here's all of their flavors- http://www.glaceicecream.com/

not sure what the dude is doing but it's great ice cream.

Weren't you touting the greatness of low sodium diet just the other day? Not that I disagree with you about the problems high sodium causes, just thought it was interesting you chose to eat a sodium bomb.

I had Ben & Jerry's "Vanilla and Heath Bar" last night.  Damn good.

Is Gellato (sp?) a bastardized ice cream? Can it be discussed in this thread?

I don't think there is any cream in it or something.  Usually super fruity flavors.

Gellato has less air.  Traditional american ice cream has tons of air in it.  Gellato tastes creamier due to less air in the product.

you asked me if i was.  the answer is, as you've now reaffirmed, indeed i was.

it's my guidance to stay low sodium, not my rule.  i'm a healthy young adult and if i want to stay healthy, i should try to avoid a high sodium diet.  occasionally i will eat high sodium foods and i can afford to.  if i had a problem with high sodium then i probably shouldn't be throwing down pints of Christoper Elbow ice cream every night.  but, since i'm cognizant about the dangers of sodium, i don't often eat foods high in it.

ice cream shouldn't be denied to anyone who wants it.  had i known about the high sodium content of ice cream i probably wouldn't have made it such a large part of my life.
