Throw out 1/3 of the NCAA games oscar has coached as an anomaly.
Since he's been at kstate 80% of the time he can't make it out of the round of 64 but look at it however you want I guess
Isn't this the case for nearly all coaches. Making the round of 32 puts you in the top 10% of all teams for that reason. Just on a pure mathematical basis, it seems there aren't a whole lot of coaches stacking up round of 32 games on a regular basis.
I wanted to look into this before responding...and i guess the answer is I don't really know. I mean at the most basic level about 25% of the field is getting into the tournament purely because they are automatic bids and would not have gotten in at-large...and as such are going to get matched up against the elite schools where the chances of them getting out of the round of 64 is slim to none. and yes, given the fact that there are 330+ teams that are eligible to compete for a spot in the tournament every year then yes, making the round of 32 puts you in the top 10% in that regard.
Anyway i'm digressing. I tried looking at coaches in the tournament over the last 15 years or so. From what i can tell there are the elite of the elite (coach K, Self, Williams, Wright, Donovan,Cal, Few, etc) that frequently make it not only out of the round of 64 but also make deep runs, and after that its a mixed bag. Statistically he appears to perform slightly above Shaka Smart and slightly below Lon Kruger. Maybe that's fine. idk. My brain tells me he should be doing better but maybe i'm just being emotional b/c I want to believe the cats can and should have a better showing.
