Just taxied 4 Amish from Yoder to Michigan and back. Enjoyable experience
go into more details on this because I'm very interested
This lady I know bought a 14-passenger van and started a business hauling Amish from Yoder, Medicine Lodge, etc. to Amish gatherings in Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, PA, New York and wherever else Amish congregate.
She was already busy with her van this week in New York and asked if I would be willing to take a young woman and a couple in their mid 60s to two separate weddings. I said I would.
Well, my dad’s car was in the shop and he was borrowing mine, so rather than strand him, I left my car w/ Mrs nicname and we got her Palisade all cleaned out and ready to use for the trip. Black Iced that sucker out for the Amish.
I kind of asked the lady I know about pricing, and looked online for info. Basically people usually charge about $1/mile for a trip with additional charges of ~$7/hr drive time and/or $7-$12/hr “waiting,” on overnight round trips. They typically will pay for a small food allowance for drivers and foot any hotel bill.
I figured it all up and based on ~2,200 miles round trip, 32 driving hours and two nights in a hotel, I’d charge $2,600 (including the hotel reimbursement). Pretty lucrative, especially if working alone, but a decent way to see the country with a partner (aka my dad).
We picked the young Amish lady up about 8:30 Tuesday in Yoder, she’d coordinated the thing, and then picked up the other couple a few miles away. Then we took turns driving and sleeping, as we lead-foot expressed the older couple to a farm outside Goshen, Indiana Wednesday morning for a wedding the following day. Then we drove the young lady about three more hours north to a farm between Clare, and Mt Pleasant, Michigan.
Checked into our hotel about 2-3 pm Wednesday and crashed. I played poker Wednesday night while my dad slept. We toiled around Thursday in Mt Pleasant and partied all night in their Aggieville, then drove over to Bay City to see Saginaw Bay and eat a walleye dinner Friday afternoon.
Then we washed and vacuumed out the vehicle and picked up our young rider and her bf, then did the whole trip in reverse, back to Yoder.
