Critics are getting less and less reliable. Review aggregators like Rotten Tomatos are almost worthless because they include so many terrible critics. Just for example, if you samples the reviews of the latest Star Wars movie, you’ll find that a goodly chunk of them focus on praising how the various narratives and diverse cast fit social aims, and largely ignore the slow, scattered, plot-hole riddled story. Another example would be the recent Ghostbusters reboot. RT’s aggregate “User Reviews” may be totally skewed by trolling etc. but somehow seem to a hit closer to the mark for me.
A better metric would be to find one or two critics you tend to agree with and just go with them. That would be an interesting website - one that pairs you with compatible critics based upon how closely you line up on a spread of movies.
