When I took my youngest to a college visit at KU, roughly 80% of the info they provided was how wherever they go, they wear KU gear, and inevitably there is a call and response. The tour guide and the leader of the main presentation were really into telling you that you could study abroad in any remote country you want and still get Rock Chalk‘ed. They then told us that they know it sounds corny but that you learn to love it and that ppl even use it as an email sign off.

Then we hiked nearly entirely across campus to only stop at the cell tower, you can’t walk under until you graduate, and to see the rules of bb.

Kind of disrespectful to call a WWII memorial to fallen soldiers a cell tower.

The only thing that beats the "gear" discussions are the "ku bar in Saginaw Michigan?" type threads but I assume the poster is always geared out.

I have traveling on business for 20 years and can count on one hand the number of 'taters I've run across. On the other hand, I l see at least one Jayhawk brother or sister of excellence and character.

It doesn't appear that many 'taters escape the sheep pens or can be away from the cattle for too long.

I had a friend from Arizona tell me that you can always spot someone from Kansas at the airport because they'll be wearing a shirt with a Jayhawk on it.

While travelling, the only way to spot fellow 'Cats is by their tailored suits, or designer polos if on vaction.

Or you see their class rings when they are picking their noses.

That’s what I do. It’s a greeting, like someone saying hello, and you say hello back. But I had never considered saying Jayhawk, and I can see the logic behind the idea.

I figure as long as you say something to acknowledge the situation, it’s fine. A few days ago I walked by a girl (hs age maybe?) wearing a Kansas Football shirt in Maine, so I said “rock chalk,” and she looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language. I would think anyone wearing a Kansas Football shirt in Maine would be all in, but maybe not.

In all seriousness a ton of random ass Midwestern college gear makes it to vintage stores in NYC and gets bought by people who clearly aren't college sports fans.  (And of course a ton of Brooklyn hipsters vacation in Maine)

I saw two old squawk fans doing the greeting in Breckenridge last week. I followed up with a Go Cats. We all had a laugh and talked about the upcoming football season.

Whenever I see a fellow cat shirt in the wild I say 'eat'em up, eat'em up ksu' and then they say 'eat'em up, eat'em up ksu' and then we hug, high five, and swap shirts after autographing them.

I gave a Go Cats on Quandary and only received an EMAW.

The Arizona friend is my favorite, he's mocking the squawk but they take it as a compliment

Also, apparently the official KU position is that you respond "Jayhawk".

My kid had orientation at KU recently and the guide told the group that when you are out somewhere and someone says "Rock Chalk" to you, you respond "Jayhawk".

The guide even had us practice it, with her saying "Rock Chalk" and the group responding "Jayhawk".

The appropriate response is a “rock chalk” right back.

Might be time for a refresher on the updated standards. Maybe they have included some DEI based responses.

I had a KU friend get very angry when I attempted to tell him that per the K-State alumni association (the last time I looked)  approximately 50% 45% of K-State alums and Friends of K-State do not live in Kansas. He refused to believe it.

I’ve lived away from Kansas for a long time, and travel for business often. I ran/run into K-State people all the time.

KU people are absolute cringe when it comes to this topic and it further enhances the reality that they need constant affirmation and validation.

Very low self esteem

Edit: Per the KU Alumni Association - 56% of KU alumni and friends live in Kansas, 44% outside of Kansas.  Not exactly spreading their wings over their in Lawrence, like they always try and claim.

True story:
I was traveling on business to Houston with a KU friend.  He can't stop blabbing about how KU is a world recognized brand, Jayhawks can be seen all around the world, etc.  When we're getting off the plane, there's a cluster outside the gate around a guy wearing a Wildcat hat, and it was Michael Bishop!  He was talking with several K-State fans that recognized him.  I told him I admired his play in the Mineral Water Bowl against the Coffeyville Red Ravens when he was at Blinn, and how thrilled I was that he went to K-State.  We talked KSU football for a couple of minutes, I could kick myself for not getting his autograph.

I never did see any Jayhawk gear or fans when I was in Houston.
