Some (most?) folks that go to therapy don't need to change their behavior, but instead understand how to better cope with the world around them.
I don’t disagree, but the “cope” part is the action they need to take, isn’t it?
Like, if selfishness and self centeredness are causing issues for someone, it’s important to be vigilant about being on the lookout for those behaviors, AND also to take action (like doing selfless acts)…can’t get better just sitting around thinking about being less self centered. Act your way into to right thinking, not think your way into right acting.
Also, I’d argue it doesn’t even matter WHY I am self centered. Whatever happened happened. Let’s address the behavior and work on new coping behaviors.
It’s nuanced stuff, and reasonable minds will disagree.
