1. Guns aren't the problem, mental health is the problem.
2. Mental health problems are not real.

*Pete, I totally agree with you that for some stuff, it is good to just stop doing the stuff that is making you sick or unhappy. I just thought it was darkly ironic that Matt Walsh was the person telling people to just stop making bad choices.

Incredible self own / ball tazing by Matt Walsh here:

https://twitter.com/KevinDr_ver/status/1747973738765664317?s=20

I am not familiar with Matt Walsh, but I do empathize with his notion that understanding "why" you do stupid crap is less important that acknowledging the stupid crap you do and taking actions to stop doing stupid crap.  It's nuanced of course, but the most effective part of changing one's behaviors is changing one's behaviors (not knowing it was because your mother sat you sideways on the toilet).

He’s a Charlie Kirk/Ben Shapiro carbon copy. His claim to fame (aside from his hilariously bad takes on petty much everything) is he made a “documentary” where I believe the premise was him going around interviewing randos on the street asking them to define what a woman is so he could use his galaxy brain gotcha logic to basically argue that there are no trans people, just perverts and men who want to compete in women’s sports

IMO the "why" is the most important part.  When you have a problem that causes symptoms of that problem, and you treat only the symptoms and not the problem, you will return to said symptoms or other symptoms of the problem overtime.  It's likely that this cycle will make the symptoms worse over time and/or lead to more symptoms at one time.

Identifying the "why" is identifying the problem.  For long term change and health, actions need to be towards the "why", imo.

Some (most?) folks that go to therapy don't need to change their behavior, but instead understand how to better cope with the world around them.

I don’t disagree, but the “cope” part is the action they need to take, isn’t it?

Like, if selfishness and self centeredness are causing issues for someone, it’s important to be vigilant about being on the lookout for those behaviors, AND also to take action (like doing selfless acts)…can’t get better just sitting around thinking about being less self centered.  Act your way into to  right thinking, not think your way into right acting.

Also, I’d argue it doesn’t even matter WHY I am self centered. Whatever happened happened. Let’s address the behavior and work on new coping behaviors.

It’s nuanced stuff, and reasonable minds will disagree.

I know an old dude in his 80’s who has made a life’s work out of just “taking action.”  He likes to say “depression starts in my ass.”  When he is feeling down, he goes and does something for someone else. Like, he will walk around the grocery store parking lot putting carts in the cart corral if he is feeling sad.

It probably does depend on the issues.  For example, when some folks are depressed, they can medicate in one way or another to help alleviate the feeling of depression, but sometimes if they understand what it their life is making them depressed, they can address that issue and possible resolve their depression by resolving the why.

Sometimes it's just reframing your thinking and continually practicing that.  Sometimes it's getting a new job, a new friend, losing weight, quitting drinking, cutting out negative influences, attempting to overthrow the US Fed Govt, etc.

That's great and also inspiring.
If there was a gif of nicname thwarting the attempted-flag-taker and then gesturing him to suck it, followed by motioning for all of Hilton Shelter to boo him louder, it'd be better than that auburn gif.

Joe Rogan has damaged a lot of young men who need mental health supports either through medication or things like therapy.

It's the "It worked for me so I'm extrapolating that on everyone ever" thinking and attitude.

My family has chronic blood pressure, cholesterol issues and has for generations.  My grandfather who never drank, smoked, did anything except be a farmer in SEK.

He was like 98% arteries clogged when he was like 60 years old.

I was complaining about taking a med for blood pressure and cholesterol at 42 and a buddy told me I just needed magnesium and more fresh air/exercise.

He also doesn't believe in therapy and thinks mental health/anxiety/depression is completely a choice.

Steve Dave also peddled crypto and magnesium to me. I still don't feel any better. Many would say worse.
