No . . .  just lots of basketball, vacations and golf.   But no brush clearing.

I believe I read that at this pace of travel, Barry and wife will leave largest carbon footprint in 4 years of any president and family in history . . . by far.

Welcome to 2010 politics.

confusing thread.  people who normally hate the environment are bitching about the environment.   :dunno:

True story. I interviewed for a job with the EPA back when I was about to graduate. Didn't get the job though. Oh well.

2010 politics seem to be run very similarly to big time college basketball programs.

BP is an oil and gas company. I don't really think they are suited to solve natural disasters like this. Instead of working with BP, why doesn't the government work with a coastal engineering firm to solve the problem, and just send the bill to BP? Maybe it's because they want this disaster to get worse so they can blame Big Oil.

  why wouldn't they blame big oil?  it's their fault.

Yes, it is big oil's fault. Do you think that they are the most qualified people to be fixing this problem? Why not have someone else fix it, and just make BP pay for it? There will still be plenty of time for the government to get their shots in on big oil when we no longer have a well leaking millions of gallons of oil into the gulf of Mexico.

why would the government be better at fixing the oil problem than the oil company. is there an oil problem fixing part of the government that i'm not aware of?

Well obviously BP sucks at cleaning up and capping the damn thing, which just means the government would be even worse because it's the government.

How do you figure? Bush started a war in Iraq, a war in Afghanistan, royally mumped up the Katrina response, and gave multiple tax breaks.

Obama has passed health care legislation which basically just forces people to adopt the current system of insurance, and has royally mumped up the oil spill response.

I count 4 for Bush and 2 for Obama, though I'm sure I'm forgetting things for both.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

People on this board (heck, in this country) would be very well-served to read more news.

I've remembered why I don't ever read this board.  Critical thinking is dead or dying, apparently.  :clack:

If you read this board more often, you would learn that the news is government-controlled, so you are really better off not watching it. :shy:

I get my news from many sources, but, yeah, probably mostly from the NYT.  I do check out the NY Post or Fox News online, if I see a story that looks like it might be "spun" a certain way.  On TV I only watch local news, supplemented occasionally by France24, BBC and The 700 Club(!), to give me broader viewpoints.

You take it all in, and that's where the critical thinking happens.

EDIT: I don't want to sound this preachy, so I'm quitting this line of crap.  I just got frustrated.

What are your thoughts on the oil spill? Are you satisfied with the cleanup effort? Do you think that the government is doing everything it can to stop the leak?

I have no thoughts on the oil spill, because I don't care about the oil spill.  BP should be held accountable for the spill and lack of cleanup, not the government.  Comparisons to Katrina are weird.  Katrina was a natural event that the gov't dragged their heals on.  This oil spill is a man made event that the company responsible doesn't have a solution for.

I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT!

It's not about who is held accountable. It's about fixing the problem. The well drilled by BP either met all government regulations, or the government chose not to enforce those regulations. Sadly, this would give BP a good case in court if they didn't want to pay for all of the damages. Meanwhile, a giant oil slick is about to completely ruin all of our gulf coast industries at a time where we already have nearly 10% unemployment. It seems to me that this would be a problem the government should be trying to do something about.
