Also black clergy are largely more aggressive with expressing their thoughts on the subject. The First United Methodist Church is about to split largely because of southern and African Methodist churches won't allow gay pastors or gay marriages in their churches.

this is going to shock the living crap out of you (not really) but almost all of the predominantly pasty ass white churches hate the crap out of homosexuals as well (your already mentioned Methodists and ELCA being a couple of the notable exceptions).

But they can’t just come out and SAY that

mostly they say they love gays but unfortunately the gays will burn in eternal hellfire because they are evil gays who won't repent for being evil gays.

I'm confused about whether you believe this is a Team Pete smokescreen (1st post), or whether it's attributable to the factors identified in your 2nd post, or both, or neither, or some combination?

i think the factors i mentioned explain public opinion on the issue.

i think the reason you're thinking about it is because the buttigieg campaign has raised the salience of the issue because it provides an explanation for buttigieg performing poorly in polls of black dem voters that is comforting to white voters considering buttigieg.

Fun to imagine how Bernie people would react if Bernie had a plurality of delegates and then didn't get the nomination.

I hope it happens and won't feel bad at all for any of them.

Maybe Charlie should have gone to college after all. I'm sure he could have learned how progressive tax brackets work.

There are a lot of really huge dumbshits out there. And the venn diagram of dumbshits and people who follow this type of fringe media is a perfect circle.

What you are referring to is not how progressive tax brackets work.  It has to do with having different marginal tax rates for different brackets.  You could have the same thing with regressive tax brackets.

There are tons of college-educated people out there that have no idea how marginal tax rates work.

Charlie’s confusion is exactly about progressive tax brackets.

There is also the issue of total effective compensation being higher because health care costs would be zero, but Charlie is just being insincere about that part.

No, his confusion is not about progressive tax brackets.  He understands that as your income goes up you pay a higher rate.  You could have a progressive tax system where as your income goes up, you pay a higher rate on all of your income.  This would still be a progressive tax system.

What he is missing is that the progressive nature of federal income taxes is only implemented at a marginal rate.  He is missing the concept of marginal tax rates, not the nature of progressive tax brackets.

Like it’s incredibly simple how tax brackets work in the US. You’re acting like Charlie understands all the possible ways our tax code could be structured and yet has no clue how our incredibly simple system actually works.

It's no problem if you don't understand the difference between what it means for a tax system to be progressive or regressive versus a tax system that has different marginal rates.

For example, a sales tax (especially in Kansas), is considered regressive even though it is implemented at a constant rate.  This is because lower-income households spend a higher percentage of their income.

The term progressive when it comes to taxes only refers to whether or not higher-income groups pay a higher percentage of their income in taxes compared to lower income groups.  One way to implement a progressive tax system is with higher marginal tax rates.  However, for a tax to be progressive, it does have to have higher marginal tax rates.  The higher rates could be global and apply to all income including income that is below the threshold for the higher rate.

The only thing Charlie is missing is that our progressive tax system is implemented with marginal tax rates.  He understands that as your income goes up, your tax rate goes up.  He does not understand that these rates are implemented in a marginal fashion.

Can you explain how a tax bracket could exist in a progressive tax system without marginal rates? Cause we’re talking about tax brackets.

Sure.  I'll give you an example where the rates are global rather than marginal.  If you earn $30,000 or less, you pay a 5% tax rate on all of your income.  If you earn more than $30,000, you pay a 6% rate on all of your income.

So, if your income is $30,000, you would owe $1500 in income taxes.  If your income is $30,001, you would owe $1800.06 in income taxes.

Is that an example or is that a tax system that only exists in your and Charlie’s imagination?

It is an example that answers the question "Can you explain how a tax bracket could exist in a progressive tax system without marginal rates?"

The biggest problem with Charlie's post is that he applied the rate Bernie proposes for $10m+/yr to the $29,000 level.
