I'm not for crucifying people for mistakes of their youth, this guy freely admits he made mistakes and has apologized for them and looks forward to making things better. I personally believe mistakes of this degree have been made by virtually all humans, but has their judgment changed over the years? That is more important to me. I like to lol at the most vehement calls for his resignation knowing that that person in all his glory has done something just as horrible.

What's the downside of lying? Unless he thinks he would survive if it was proven to undoubtedly him, which seems unlikely.

All it takes is one person who knew him back in the day to call him a liar, honestly or dishonestly.

Yeah I don't see how that changes his situation much from saying "yeah that was me". He's pretty much done either way, lying would be a hail Mary

I agree it would be (or is) a Hail Mary play. Just leaves him vulnerable to attack. But, I guess a slim chance of success is better than none. At this point, if a single person comes forward publicly and claims he saw the dude in blackface/KKK garb, he's toast. No one will insist on investigating the claim.

I've heard someone say that they don't think blackface is racist if it's halloween and you are dressing up as a specific person, but it is racist if you are just being a generic black guy. I take "not sure" to be someone with that sort of opinion.

I do like that people were not sure whether they were democrat, republican, independent, or other, though.

Depends on how directly you focus on the question. I could see myself putting Other/Not sure on that one cause whether something is racist almost always depends on context. I don’t think a 5 year old is racist if he black faces up to look like a famous black person for Halloween, but if he does because his parents encouraged him to then yeah I think they’re probably at least a little racist.
