The only difference I see is that UCF was bold enough to claim their title like any big time football program would and KU was just too small timey to do the same.

You could find a team that has a legit gripe about not getting an equitable opportunity to play for a national championship literally every year, it's the nature of college football.

The thing that makes the argument about the first four out during bball season meaningless is this: not one single team has a legitimate gripe.  EVER.  The national tournament starts for every team the first day of their conference tournament.  Every team has the same chance to win it all.

That's why fball needs to go to conference champions.  Again, there would be no LEGITIMATE gripe.  The national playoff would start the first day of your conference schedule.  Win and you're in....that simple.   It would make OOC games meaningless which would incentivize teams to schedule up to prepare for their conference.
Teams wouldn't schedule up.  They'd treat them like NFL preseason games, schedule patsies, and sit their starters.

Sit their starters????  This would be a brilliant strategy that i'm sure most coaches would ascribe to (even though most of their starters turn over each year.)  Great point.  No need to get the "starters" game experience to get them ready for the start of the tournament.

First, we're not talking about a 20-game schedule like the NFL+preseason.

Second, no chance a good team would sit their starters unless they were actually recovering from injury. Very few college kids are going to have enough experience to warrant that.

Third, schools already face significant pressure to schedule good OOC games.  Good games bring in more dollars to the local community because they are better attended and they bring more dollars to the conference because of better TV ratings.

Fourth, as long as there are at large spots available, scheduling will still matter.

For as huge of a dumbass as WB is, I kind of agree with him here. I'd limit it to the P5 champs, then 3 at larges with some G5 autobids for being undefeated w/ a top 15-20ish ranking (computer type rating or human? IDK), so they don't schedule a super soft OOC.

I'd throw in that you force each P5 to play another P5 OOC, and maybe force the 8 game P5 confey schedules to play a G5 OOC game as well on top of that. No idea if that would actually work, but to me, it would make for some pretty cool OOC games since a loss doesn't end your Natty hopes. Which is why many big schools get scared of a lot of OOC matchups, I think.

I agree. That doesn’t change the fact that most (maybe all?) of the programs that have more than a few national championships have titles less legitimate than UCF’s.

Absolutely, but within this current system G5 teams do have a chance

Houston would have been in last year had they not crap the bed in conference. They beat two top 5 schools from the P5.

I can't be as sure but I think Boise, TCU, and Utah may have made the top 4 in this format. Boise and Utah finished the regular season in the top 6 of the BCS twice each, TCU finished in the top 4 twice. This UCF team would have finished 10th this year if the BCS existed, the same as Hawaii in 2007 and Tulane in 1998. It's fine for UCF to act like they were snubbed but to try it as an objective argument is silly.

Man I get what you're saying, but you're leaving out a lot of the scheduling issues G5 teams face.  Big schools that you'd need to beat to jump up in the rankings are not scheduling these teams anymore.  They see the risk reward as too big a losing proposition.  Why not schedule like the SEC and have cupcakes with few exceptions when your leagues value is already extremely overvalued by pollsters.  UCFs of the world don't have enough opportunity to schedule these games to jump up fast enough in the rankings.

KU is right on par with Notre Dame ... when it comes to adding additional conference revenue

the only reason i posted the comparative SOS's between '07 KU and UCF was to laugh at ku's crappy schedule.

You are right that Houston could have made it so there is a chance.  I will say that realistically, G5 schools have to go on at least a two year run in order to get a chance.  That seems pretty unfair to me.

They also have to schedule teams OOC that end up being really good when they actually play the game. Guess wrong and too bad.

I agree with all of this but there are P5 schools in the exact same boat.

I don't think any undefeated P5 team would ever be left out of a playoff. There are some that could finish with 1 loss and be passed over for a 2 loss team, though.

if OU had played San Diego State or whatever instead of Ohio State, then not lost to iowa state, they would have still made the playoff

if 5 P5 teams go undefeated then someone will necessarily be left out.

Any ranking with Toledo in the top 25 is a horrible ranking system.
