That would be a recipe for all G5 teams to compete for the softest possible non-con schedule.  Going undefeated in conference but missing the playoffs due to losing a non conference game against a P5 team would get the AD run.

Very few of these teams are actually capable of going undefeated in conference, so I don't think that would matter.

Guys this was solved already by that madman Chingon:

And introducing CHIngons Preferred Playoff System (ChiPPS):

Automatic bid:
Winner of each P5 conference
Hightest ranked midmajor
Two wildcards (two highest ranked P5 teams remaining, with the caveat that a conference can have at most two representatives in the playoffs)

This year:

1) Clemson[1] vs 8) USC[17]
3) Georgia [3] vs 6) Wisconsin [5]
4) Ohio State [4] vs 5) Alabama [6]
2) Oklahoma[2] vs 7) UCF [10]

I agree the risk is low. And G5 teams by far have more incentive to schedule good OOC games because they can bring in much more  revenue than conference games. So if you really think you have a chance at running the table, sure schedule some cupcakes. It’s not like some of the top ranked schools haven’t done that.

For the 8 team format, I also think an easy solution is adding a play-in game for any undefeated G5 teams that don’t get the auto bid or at large spot. They could play the lowest ranked at large team similar to an NFL Wildcard game.

If you have more than 2 extra undefeated G5 teams, the 2 lowest ranked play each other first.

4) Ohio State [4] vs 5) Alabama [6]
2) Oklahoma[2] vs 7) UCF [10]

that's a good system. it looks like your seeding is based on each school's ChiPPS rating, but i think you'd want to reward p5 conf champs with seeds 1-5, then sort out 6-8 with the 2 wild cards and g5 team based on their ChiPPS rating.

for example, the pre-bowl snowbrag rankings of the p5 champs, highest g5, and 2 highest p5 at-larges were as follows:
1) alabama at-large1
2) georgia champ1
3) oklahoma champ2
4) ohio state champ3
5) wisconsin at-large2
6) clemson champ4
7) ucf g5 champ
13) usc champ5

and the seeding (if you follow what i said above) would be as follows:
1) georgia [2] vs 8) ucf [7]
3) ohio state [4] vs 6) alabama [1]
4) clemson [6] vs 5) usc [13]
2) oklahoma [3] vs 7) wisconsin [5]

So a good G5 team gets to pound puds to a conference championship and gets the same seat at the table that an 11-1 team that went thru the P5 wringer does?

Yeah absolutely. Its a win win for the CFP.
-If the g5 team gets beat, cool, we rewarded a top level p5 champ with an overmatched opponent for the first round.
-If the g5 team wins, well they obviously belong

Do you think 16 seeds have the same seat at the table as 1 seeds?

In 2015, Western Kentucky, San Diego State, and Arkansas State went undefeated in conference play.  How did they do outside the conference?

Western Kentucky lost to Indiana and was blown out by LSU 48-20.

SDSU lost to Penn State, was blown out by Cal 35-7, and lost to SOUTH ALABAMA

Arkansas State lost to Mizzou, and were blown out 55-6 by USC, 37-7 by Toledo, and 47-28 by Louisiana Tech.

It's a great theory, but the reality is that the small schools simply don't measure up.  David can beat Goliath once or twice, but he can't win week after week after week.

The tournament is exciting because it's a gimmick.  It's a pretty terrible way to crown a champion, tho.

I think we can all agree that the best way to determine a champion is for a bakery to invent a foundation and have that "foundation" arbitrarily choose champions decades after the fact.

Yeah take Ching's system and use computer rankings for the mid major and at large and tell everyone the formula for the rankings

In the ideal world, any FBS team can start the year knowing that if they do X they have a guaranteed shot at the title.  For P5 teams that would be win your conference, and for G5 teams it would be getting the highest ranking (which should drive efforts to schedule legit opps).

I think you tell the G5 that they get one seat and they can decide how to award it.

Why is it always presumed that a playoff has to have 4, 8, 16, etc. teams?  I like continuing to stress the importance of the regular season by having rewards aside from being a completely equal member of the playoffs.  Byes, home games, etc.

Of course, I generally think trying to have a playoff in college football is dumb.  There are too many college football teams and not enough games in the year for there to ever be a truly fair way to whittle the pool down to 1 undisputed champion.  Just go back to where everyone does their own thing, you play to win your conference and whatever bowl game that conference is aligned with, and claim whatever you want at the end based on your accomplishments.  The free market will judge how much any claim should be recognized.

A 16 team playoff with just 1 at large would be pretty nice. I kind of think 15 teams with no at larges would be better, though. Just give #1 a bye.

if you get rid of at-larges then OOC becomes 100% completely meaningless.

I think we would get a lot more marquee OOC games that way. They would still be very important for seeding, but a loss wouldn't hurt all that much. They would also still count toward bowl eligibility.

Fair. I just figure if i'm going all the way to Florida, I want to be on the beach, not inland. Even if it's only an hour away.
