I just finished another book on a different era of Soviet spying. I get the impression that grooming Trump was not just something they were capable of and could have done, but that stuff like that is pretty much standard operating procedure.

I also get the impression that dax's allegation that no one would be able to outwit U.S. intelligence and security is completely wrong.

Knowing the Germans they probably don't even have a working ship(s) to even make such an effort. As they live under the warm comfy blanket of U.S. military might. Old LibDerp Nation would be outraged at the amount of money that the United States spends protecting Europe. New LibDerp Nation prefers the ongoing hegemony of NATO and wants more European countries in NATO which will cost even more money for the US to protect . . . since the US can't count on its NATO partners to do a whole hell of a lot.
