There's no other way to interpret what you said.
Just admit it was a stupid idea that got 100's of thousands killed and created millions of refugees. At one point the DOD backed rebels were fighting the CIA backed rebels. The NYT's ran a story 3 or 4 years ago which concluded that the notion of moderate rebels in Syria was by and large total bullshit.
The only other thing you could want is US boots on the ground. After Obama refused to send the rebels better weapons they got pushed back so far they'd never recover. (It didn't help that we told the Russians how to bomb them). Leaving only one course left to oust Assad.
