A bunch of Trump supporters are racists, bigots, misogynists, and/or homophobes. Many probably don't think of themselves that way or even act that way in general everyday life, but if you want a racist, bigot, misogynist, homophobe to be president then you are at least a little bit racist, bigoted, misogynist or homophobic.

Trump needed more than just out right white male racists to win. He also needed people who were too stupid or short sighted or disengaged to understand what electing this type of man means for themselves or other Americans.

Honestly, the most troubling part is not what Trump's policies will be (although that's a concern) but the fact that there exist so many people in this country that support his views.

Sure.  Trump was a brute and a bully throughout his campaign.  It's troubling that that sort of behavior worked to get him elected.

That's said, I don't necessarily think his being elected as a result of that behavior is some American existential crisis.  I imagine plenty of people (most?) voted for him in spite of his antics and rhetoric, not because of them.

the hysteria over all of this is annoying, but I can empathize with the fear that a lot of people feel. Trump and his supporters said many disgusting things throughout this campaign. If I were a minority, I would most likely be very upset.

You don't think it could be a shock to the system to some people that 50,000,000 in this country thought it was okay to rationalize voting for someone who behaves like he does? He is now the leader of the free world and he just a few months ago stood on a stage and mocked a guy with cerebral palsy. I think it is shocking to some because people, mostly privileged, think the number of people willing to swallow his behavior and allow him to be the most powerful person in the world would be a small fraction of 50,000,000. I think trump is full of crap so I think he will pretty much do what the Republican establishment wants him to do, but I completely understand some people being upset about this many people willing to be okay with Trump's behavior. I consider myself woke so this isn't that surprising to me.
