I'm really curious about how long Trump will talk. He won't/can't stay on script and otherwise doesn't have a hell of a lot to say.

And how well might a speech like he gave at his campaign rallies go over on TV? Would it attract swing voters? Would it repel them?

the guy who has to be most pissed about all of this has to be poor lindsey graham.  he's been the most vocal, open and consistent antitrumpite since forever and on paper his denouncing of trump and refusal to attend the convention is a stronger repudiation than cruz's nuanced, vetted speech.  yet cruz is getting all of the attention and will likely go down in history as having led the opposition to trump.

“I think he’ll say something, he’ll give a sign of where he is on Donald Trump that will be pleasing to the Trump campaign and to Republicans,” Donald Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort says about Sen. Ted Cruz at news conference during Republican National Convention in Cleveland.

“We’ve been talking back and forth about what the senator wants to say. I’ll see a copy of the speech later this morning because he’s still working on it”

http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/trackers/2016-07-20/manafort-says-he-expects-cruz-speech-to-please-trump-camp-gop

Possibilities (most likely to least likely):

1) They got some sort of cryptic/weak assurance from Cruz, ran with it, had the "boo" and "we'll ruin you" as their leverage and totally misread the situation

2) They got no assurances, had the text, were somehow still surprised, scrambled the booing

3) Cruz lied to them

The real question is why the hell they thought that Cruz's "pledge" was sufficient to invite him in the first place.

Looks like a combo of 1 and 2.  I think this is Dunning-Kruger effect meets Trump's razor.

so weird.

it never would have occurred to me, a year ago, that one would be able to offer a cogent argument that ted cruz is a more moral man than paul ryan.

I'm pretty sure none of you actually watched Ted's speech. Let me explain how this works: the media is focusing on the boorish behavior of some pro-Trump delegates who were unhappy that Ted didn't give an explicit endorsement, which is fits the media playbook of focusing on any "controversy" to distract from the substance of the speeches and thereby minimize Trump's convention bounce. By contrast, the coverage of the DNC will be a love fest to maximize Hillary's bounce (to the extent a dead fish dropped from a window bounces). The overwhelmingly liberal journobloc puts their thumbs on the scales every election. The impact is hard to quantify, but it is very much real.

I would encourage you to broaden your horizons and actually watch the speech. It was amazing from start to finish. He was gracious to Trump, congratulating him on winning the nomination, and spoke passionately about conservative principles - chiefly among them freedom and the rule of law.
Dude.

You don't think Cruz would happily slash Trump's tires to give himself a shot at 2020?

Something I heard on TV sourced from a member of Trump's campaign was that the reason Trump decided to walk out during Cruz's speech was to be the bigger man and save Cruz from all of the booing in spite of receiving no endorsement. It happened pretty much immediately afterward and I got the impression that this was the pre-planned response in case Cruz did not endorse Trump. If so, it really seems like Trump thought he could make Cruz speaking a win-win situation.

Trump honestly doesn't care about any of this as long as the media is talking about him. I'm sure he would rather the RNC be a much bigger train wreck than it is at this point.
