Possibilities (most likely to least likely):

1) They got some sort of cryptic/weak assurance from Cruz, ran with it, had the "boo" and "we'll ruin you" as their leverage and totally misread the situation

2) They got no assurances, had the text, were somehow still surprised, scrambled the booing

3) Cruz lied to them

The real question is why the hell they thought that Cruz's "pledge" was sufficient to invite him in the first place.

They had a copy of the speech, as sys said.

Again, insane they brought Cruz in the first place given they clearly did not lock up endorsement.

Andrea Mitchell saying she watched Trump wait just outside the arena to see if Cruz would endorse him. When it became clear that Cruz was not going to do so, Trump entered the hall in order to draw attention away from Cruz.
