They could probably try harder to make baskets.

That's recruiting.

This KSU team definitely does not play hard.

They play hard enough. Effort isn't the issue. MHO.
They get beat in transition more than any KSU team I can remember. That's primarily lazyness imo.

Granted, this is anecdotal but that first half of the Oklahoma game was insanely lazy.

Also, I meant "play hard" to be relative to the rest of the league. They don't play as hard as any of the top teams except Baylor. (Again, I recognize this is anecdotal)

A well-coached team is a team that responds in an affirmative manner to the tutelage offered by their coach. Well-coached teams can be good and they can be horrendous. It all depends on their coach.

Cases in point -  the Squawks '88 Championship team under Larry Brown was a well-coached team. Their talent was outperformed by their coaching.

On the other side, oscar has taken Frank's kids to the NCAA tournament and lost in the first round every time. His teams have gotten worse every year since.

Both are well-coached teams.

Two points in response. First, if you followed CBB in '88 you would know that Larry pulled off one of the greatest coaching jobs in history in the championship game. It was his strategy. I watched the first half thinking he was out of his mind, but then realized what he was doing, which worked. No one expected KU to run with OU but they did.

Second point: Agreed. oscar seems to have a bit of trouble winning when most of his players are his recruits.

I don't think it's that hard to evaluate. Does talent make some coaches look better? Yes. But on the whole, if the offensive and defensive strategies fit the personnel then the team is well coached.  It's all about adapting game to game, year to year, to what your team does best and avoiding what it is not good at.

Being well coached isn't a compliment that means anything though. Good coaching without good recruiting and talent is meaningless.

DNR the whole thread, but teams that get talked about as being 'well coached' often have shitty talent/ shitty recruiting.

I don't think I've ever seen a team lose a bunch of teams and think they were well-coached.

You can be well coached and have a shitty team, Jesus. However, if you assembled that team, it's on you.
