Heard a lot of talk about it but haven't listened or anything. I'm guessing I'd enjoy it a lot but it seems like a big hassle to get tickets and stuff.
spotify, son.  it's basically an opera so you don't miss out on much by just listening to it.

thanks dad
if you really wanna get a full experience (stick with me here) it might help to read the lyrics while listening.  I remember on my first listen I was a little confused as to who was speaking sometimes.

So the conservative am radio lady this morning was calling for a boycott because the casting call asked for non-white actors only and she's sick of reverse racism and asked what would happen if there was a musical of mlk and it only used white actors

Is the whole thing singing or is it like Frozen where there is some talking and some singing?

King George is played by a white gentleman.

Is the whole thing singing or is it like Frozen where there is some talking and some singing?
It's essentially an opera.  All singing.  Think Phantom of the Opera, Les Mis, Rent....That sort of thing.

I'm seeing it in November with my mom.  :shy:

We're slumming it in a matinee performance.  Hopefully the other cretins in attendance don't ruin it.

Well the entire thing is sung/rapped.  That's pretty much an opera.

Well that already did happen.

Fav songs depend on the day. Lots of good ones. Listening to Stay Alive, One Last Time, Washington On Your Side a lot. Love switching between the war songs and the politics songs.

Favorite part right now- ATTACK! RETREAT! ATTACK! RETREAT!

Interesting.  I'm not a huge fan of any of those numbers, with the exception of stay alive.  OH I'M SORRY, IS THIS NOT YOUR SPEED?!

Non-Stop has to be my favorite.  Quiet Uptown is definitely top 5.  Lately Who Tells Your Story has been a frequent listen.

"In their eyes I see YOU, Alexander.  I see you every time."   :bawl:

Also, I can rap the entire first verse of My Shot.  Pretty boss.

So this is the theatre thread, cool.

-Just left Book of Mormon, imagine my surprise when looking at the Playbill and seeing half the cast being black. It was hard at first for me to get past Mormons being the butt of the joke, but I got over it, the show was awesome.

-I've heard some of the music from Hamilton and have seen a few clips and it looks like I may be overrated, but I will be seeing it here in DSM this year.

-I saw Wicked in London, it was awful, I hated it.

-Rent is the best musical I've ever seen, just amazing music.

Several other GE'rs saw BoM in Des Moines this weekend also  :surprised: .

I don't know what to tell you about Hamilton.  I was hooked from the very start.  Maybe it's not for everyone.

Rent is awesome.  I listen to the songs very often.  Although I prefer the movie OST to the original stage production.

But the movie and the original stage production has essentially the exact same cast?

But Rosario Dawson.

What's your favorite song from Rent?  I think mine is probably Another Day.

We went to BoM Thursday night in DSM expecting to have a blast and we did. I'd seen it before but didn't enjoy it any less. Elder Cunningham was exceptional, better than the original and the one I saw in NYC, imo.

:sdeek: I love Wicked. I saw it in Wichita so I would assume the London show was even better. Actaully it is coming back to Wichita in October so I will probably see it again. (I also the read the book and the musical is MUCH different but I like them both.)

I would like to see Rent but when your husband doesn't like musical theatre (or any theatre) it makes it more difficult to go to shows.  :frown:

I'm guessing it's pretty tough to replicate that voice.

Elphaba had an amazing voice but the story line was waaay to syrupy, when the Wizard of Oz has a harder edge you have a problem. The end to Wicked is the most outrageous thing I've ever seen. If I were prepared for Wicked to be appropriate for my 5 year old I might have thought differently about it, it was essentially a cartoon made into a stage show. Speaking of cartoon made into a stage show, have you seen the original Broadway cast?  :surprised:

Tell Gooch to stop being a dumbass about musical theatre, like movies some are good and some blow. Rent is a modern story, compared to most musicals anyway. It has someone getting his ass kicked, pretty women, aids, death, etc. If you like NYC and I know he does, you'll like Rent.

Yeah, the story covered about 5% of what happened in the book plus they changed a bunch of stuff. The actual story of the book is much better/darker/more developed.

But I like all the songs in the musical.

Gooch did like Book of Mormon but he was meh about Avenue Q. Those are the only two that I have talked him into seeing.
