Pinewood Derby Day, and other life or death competitions
« on: January 09, 2016, 09:02:36 AM »
This morning is the Pack Pinewood Derby day for Pete and Little Pete. This is our second year (Wolf). We won our age group (Bobcat Den) last year, so there is a LOT of pressure on us this year to take it up a notch and place at the Pack level.  Pressure makes diamonds though.

I don't feel good about it this year, like I did last year. I was out of town for work, and didn't get to participate in any practice runs last night.  We were whipping fools' asses in practice runs last year, and suckers knew what was what.

This year our pinewood baby is going to make it's first run when it counts.

I bet this is how most heroes feel before their big moments in history.

I wish I still had a picture of my pine wood derby cars. I only entered 3. Won 2. :) Good luck, Pete.

Graphite the crap out of those shafts.  And when it comes to derby races if you aren't cheating you definitely aren't trying.

I totally graphited the eff out of it.  Sanded the axels down, camber angled wheels.....and between you and me, that left front wheel rides REAL light.

Balances about a half inch or so in front of the rear wheels

My son and wife handled the paint job and racing stripes while I was out of town.  We'll leave that at that.

I am a bit concerned about one of my real axels.  Wood split when I was putting it in, so I might have a mid race repair in my future.

They had a crash.  Some dads didn't remove the last cars.  Our slammed into theirs.  I blame mismanagement!

Best of luck to little Pete.

Success in the pine wood derby is an excellent jumpstart to a successful life.

A top 3 finish and you might as well punch his ticket to Harvard. If he finishes outside the top 5.....well, the world needs ditch diggers too.

I was so disappointed with this as a kid.  All the best cars were just wedge shaped.  Looked like they hardly spent any time on it.

the first one that dobberjr built looked awesome. Glued one Lego in place and then built a Lego car. It was slow as eff and he was pretty disappointed, but he basically did it all himself at the age of 6 or 7. I didn't know that I was supposed to build it and give him credit until we showed up on race day. Kids who still pissed themselves had rocketed propelled pieces of wood.
Our approach changed the next year.

When it comes to pinewood derby, there's three kinds of dads: (1) Dads who don't give a crap and either don't help or do a shitty job; (2) dads who secretly want to win and do most of the work but they know that's not something to be proud of so they keep it low key, and (3) dads who do all the work and don't even bother to hide that they did all the work.

i'm solidly Dad 2. As a Dad 2, I rough ridin' loathe Dad 3s. There's nothing more annoying than those assholes who show up on race day with their little tackle boxes full of gear, custom carrying cases, etc. They don't even let their kids hold the cars. Last year at district, one car had working headlight. I'm not even shitting you. And they're always the same basic profile, aren't they? Some dumpy engineer-type. Hey all you Dad 3s - get mumped. Seriously. Have the decency to at least let the car look like your kid had a modicum of involvement in crafting your pinewood dick substitute.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, K-State fans could have beheaded the entire KU team at midcourt, and K-State fans would be celebrating it this morning.  They are the ISIS of Big 12 fanbases.
