I think it's interesting because the use of "wetback" as a preoperative might date back 20 or 30 years (I've read that NYT piece and the reference isn't *that* bad, it's actually a reference to the colloquial).  It's interesting to see its proliferation after Ike's admin and assumed expansion as a profane term.

Also if you play with the chart's "smoothing" you can get a more detailed look at how the word(s) spikes by years. So you see that "wetback" drops dramatically in the 60s and early 70s and doesn't spike with its all time high till the early 70s.  I figured it would have spike earlier with Chavez's work but that was 5ish years before. But we have "Wetback", seemingly a proper name, spike during the farm protest movement.
