HCIW is so stupid

It works in this case.

Snyder deserves a HoF victory lap.

Assistant coaches can have more recruiting contact than a head coach so it gives VB more time to recruit.

This gives VB basically an extra recruiting class, year on the trail as the assistant then his first year as HC is his second class.
Giving BV the HC job and having him run the program as he sees fit is actually what makes sense. (This assumes you think BV will make a good head coach.)

I'm all for what gets Venables here, so if it's one or the other, I'm for whichever one works.

However, in this situation, Bill isn't really running a whole lot, and history has shown recently that a soft transition generally nets better results than a hard transition, at least in the short term.

Venables would have a year to run the program as he sees fit, with Bill's input, and he'd be able to give a number of the assistants a year long interview to see if he wants to keep working with them.  Several of them are going to walk when Bill does, based on age alone, so it's safe to say that BV will have the opportunity to fill in assistants as he sees fit, including DC.  It also means he doesn't have to scramble to put together a staff and recruit in an 8-9 week period.  While there would be recruiting restrictions, he could recruit once they get to campus, and that would be huge for us.  It gives him a year to assemble a class and re-introduce himself to the local and regional high school and JUCO coaches.

A lot of negative stuff happens in the chaos during that transition.  Your recruits start looking around, you make snap judgments on assistants so you can have a staff going into Spring football, etc.  Existing players have to adjust to a new S&C program during winter workouts, then they have a new process during Spring football with new coaches, they generally learn new schemes vs. what they've spent months or years implementing and getting comfortable with, etc.  There are a lot of benefits to getting there a year early if that is something you're interested in.

If Venables didn't have a connection to a lot of these coaches, I could easily see him saying no.  But he does have a connection with many of them, and that may increase his comfort level in a HCIW situation.

It would be pretty great if Venzy has some say on who else on staff comes/goes for this coming year.  I understand we shouldn't expect a cleaned house, but one or two others would be nice, for recruiting if noting else.

Yeah, but Jack is dead now, and Venables has proven himself away from Stoops.

Can we throw in the 200 wins thing too to bolster this argument and give us another check in the pros column? Thanks.

this is absolutely wild speculation, but it would maybe explain the timeline of snyder's comments when asked about retiring:

-couple weeks before WVU game, said something like "i'll evaluate my situation when the season is over"

-at the hall of fame induction, said something like "i don't have any reason to retire"

so maybe in between those two questions is when this plan was put in place, and gave him more reason to be his usual cocky self when asked that type of question.

Is our class stellar or something? Are you worried that BV couldn't close the deal as head coach, but think our current staff of lazy recruiters is going to keep these recruits from looking around?

You don't think BV has been thinking about a staff? If you think he has to scramble to put together a staff, he shouldn't be even considered as HCIW. He knows exactly who he wants to hire if he comes to KSU, and the HCIW insult only makes it more difficult.

And we're worried about strength and conditioning coach adjustment? My goodness. Let's just keep the gang together forever.

if given the choice i think everyone would like to have a clean break and hire brent as the HC with no strings.  If the choice is get brent here as HCIW so snyder can validate himself and stroke his ego with the 200 win thing, victory lap, etc OR no brent venables then i'm taking the HCIW thing.

This isn't about keeping the gang together.  Snyder has created an operational and administrative structure that supports winning football.  If that is already in place, why rock the boat?  If we all agree that what we need are better players, Venables can make that happen.  Just replacing a few guys like Hayes, Miller, and Latimore with younger, more energetic recruiters will go a long way there.

Regardless of what me, you, or anyone else thinks of Snyder, he's created a structure that allows him to win with crappy recruiters and walk-ons.  Venables can make adjustments as he sees fit, but don't tear the whole house down when all you need is a little remodeling.

eff bill's "victory lap"

I don't necessarily believe in the "Victory Lap" concept.  I do think he wants to make sure that his administrative staff and coaches are taken care of, and that's why he's advocating so hard for Sean.

If he really believes the "Family" thing, he doesn't want to see a bunch of people in that complex lose their jobs when someone else shows up.  Sean prevents that from happening.

But, if you can convince someone to come and keep the majority of your coaching staff and administrative/support staff, then he can step down without guilt.

HCIW coaxes him into retirement faster.  Regardless of whether or not I want it, which I don't, there are pros to it, and it's what's most likely to get him an exit strategy more quickly.  Otherwise, he has enough capital to stay as long as he wants, and no one wants that.

Why rock the boat? To do better than what Snyder can do with walk-ons and shitty recruiters.

Vague operational and administrative stuff you're talking about should not be a concern if you have any confidence in BV's ability. Venables has been a part of three winning programs (at a higher level than Snyder, in fact). He isn't some kind of idiot that's going to change every single positive thing about the program.

if snyder wants to coach another year, then he coaches another year. the alternative is firing him, which isn't going to happen.

If you come from the mindset that Bill is inarguably the greatest football coach of all time, then you have a hard time fathoming why HCIW for the DC of the number one team in the country doesn't make much sense.

Good point, but I don't think it makes sense for BV in this situation. He should be able to do whatever he wants when he gets the job. I mean Kirby Smart wasn't asked to have an apprenticeship year at Georgia. Why should BV be forced to have one?

Venables has been a part of three winning programs (at a higher level than Snyder, in fact). He isn't some kind of idiot that's going to change every single positive thing about the program.

Some guys don't want to deal with that stuff.  Some guys just want to recruit and coach football.

Let's say Venables comes in next year as HCIW and replaces Hayes.  Cox probably walks because we'd ask him to coach DB's.  That's one guy you replace right there. Bill retires at the end of 2016.  Del and Mo walk out with him.  Venables now has three more spots to fill.  Guys that theoretically stay would be Dimel, Dickey, Coleman, Seiler, and some DB coach that he had a hand in bringing to KSU.  Maybe he moves Sean back to DoFO, which he was really good at.  Maybe Dimel leaves because he is angry for not getting a look as HC?

Plugging Venables in as HCIW doesn't mean you just keep everything the same.  It just means you get a year to evaluate the roster, compile your recruiting board, maintain some sense of continuity, begin the tweaking process, and you now can do it in 12 months instead of 2.

I mean it's okay to say that you just want Snyder gone.  I want Snyder gone.  We don't need to beat around the bush.
