There was never any prospect of KSU winning that Auburn game.

Well that's just not true.

Even if they faltered a bit down the stretch against SEC competition, I'd still classify that team as "good" and they were definitely relevant.

Interesting:

Auburn, however, struck back with a touchdown pass from Nick Marshall to Ricardo Louis with 3 ineligible receivers down field, that was not noticed by the officials.

Then, Auburn's last drive ended up in a 3rd and 9, and Nick Marshall threw the ball to Duke Williams who caught the ball, with 2 ineligible receivers down field that once again was not noticed by the officials, sealing the win for Auburn. Overall, Kansas State missed 3 field goals. After this game, the Tigers lead the all-time series 4-0-0.

That said, I was never comfortable with Cantele, which is odd because he was a 1st Team All-Big 12 kicker.  His problem was never talent, but he got the yips, and those can come on whenever.

Wasn't there one point when he was deep in his own head that he shanked an XP?

Sometimes you say mindnumbingly stupid stuff which is weird because it appears as if you put a lot of thought into each and every post.

There is absolutely no evidence that suggests he had the yips, come on man. He was a good college kicker that had one bad game; nothing less, nothing more.

Didn't his misses come in succession?

Sure, the aggregate stats look fine. But it was shortly after the Auburn game where he shanked the XP right?  Or one of his next few attempts after?

Then the OSU game.

He had a slump. I'm not going to look back and confirm, but he had the yips for a bit. It was like watching Rick Ankiel throw the ball into the stands and then wondering what in the hell was going on.

I was defending him, FWIW. But when a kicker slumps, it's mainly mental, and his slump was undoubtedly mental. That's scary because that stuff is unpredictable and usually ill timed.

Probs an Alabama fan. Didn't they get burnt by one of those zone read/option/throw/lineman down field type things the year before in their Iron Bowl loss? When Auburn went to the Natty.

Seems like the type of thing they'd bring up for years and years, and then kill a tree over it.

That is pretty great. Out of curiosity, would you be able to show how this information and also show how they did on kicks greater than 40 yards?

Pretty sure he shanked an XP a few games after the Auburn one (he didn't even have many attempts in between by my recollection). Maybe even a couple pretty easy other ones. The Auburn game definitely got in his head.

Seriously? I'm just curious if a higher percentage of attempts and/or misses were from greater than 40 yards for any of the kickers.

These stats are misleading without something like average kick distance.  Gramatica may have only been 77% but the coaches had him kicking more 50+ yarders than the other K-State kickers.

And more 60+ yarders for that matter.

That is pretty great. Out of curiosity, would you be able to show how this information and also show how they did on kicks greater than 40 yards?

The stats came from sports-reference.com and no that info isn't provided. I hope you don't think I listed those players to show that Jack Cantele is as good of a kicker as Martin Gramatica and Sebastian Janikowski. Percentage from 40+ has no relevance to my larger point although I do recall Jack being very good from his very limited attempts from 40+.

He shouldn't be penalized for the fact that his coach is increasingly more risk averse in every single aspect of running a football team with each passing day, nor should Martin be penalized for playing on dominant teams that didn't afford him the opportunities to attempt late FGs in game tying or winning situations.
