"Native Nations"

History of Native America over the last 1000 years.  Probably more of an academic audience but it's a really different take on the history and incorporates more indigenous sources of info than pretty much any other native history that I've read.

Have you been a scifi guy before or is Dune your entry point?

Dune doesn't give you much of a choice but to take it slow

I'm on my second try reading The Magic Mountain, by Thomas Mann. It's super intriguing but it's been a struggle for me. I'm going to make it to the finish this time.

Just finished _The Queen's Gambit_. Very enjoyable.

Also, I had never read _Tuesdays with Morrie_ before. One of the kids was reading it for school and I listened to the audiobook. Also very enjoyable.

Making my way through some Shakespeare.  So far this year I've read King Lear and Othello.  Now I'm on Merchant of Venice.

Going to get back to Steinbeck after I'm done with MoV.  East of Eden time.

Been on a Stephen King tear lately. The Shining, 11/22/63 and now halfway through Pet Semetary. I'm not sure when my dad tendencies to read historical and/or more high brow crap kicks in, but it certainly hasn't yet.

I have books like A Tale of Two Cities in my to-read stack but I just keep reaching for stuff that isn't that mentally taxing to get thru.

I love A Tale of Two Cities, but it took me a 10 hour flight for me to get into it. Doubt I would have been able to dive in if a TV or laptop was around.

A tale of 2 cities is a great story, helps to know the context of the Revolution and what was going on.  Probably good to listen to some podcasts or something before starting it

about to start Infinite Jest!

strap in for a few months!

i am embarrassed to find out i started this book 3 months ago

i took about 6 months off and recently picked it back up again seamlessly. still about a million pages left.

You're ahead of me, but I think I'm on roughly the same schedule.

i have come to terms with my infinite jest reading schedule, which is i read a few pages every night for about a week or two and then forget about it for weeks or months at a time and read other books. when i pick it back up, there is no need to go back and re-read anything, since the book has no plot. i do love a lot about the book. i have stopped reading the footnotes and that's increased my enjoyment tremendously (maybe it's a little eff you to DFW (RIP)). i like when we follow around Don Gately; those descriptions of the halfway house and addiction are truly amazing. everything about ETA is funny, and the conversations between the quebecois and american transgender person in a wheelchair (?) about capitalism and quebec separatism (?) while overlooking the grand canyon (?) are pretty funny although i have absolutely no idea what's going on.

mrs mocat: what's happened so far in the book?

mocat:  :dunno:

still true

Yeah. Need to read it someplace where I don't have access to my phone. Lots of names and places that are hard to keep straight when distracted.

Tale of Two Cities is my all time favorite.  Wanted to name my first child Sydney for a long time until Mrs. Dlew demanded a say.

Yep. By halfway house I also meant Boston AA and the crocodiles, etc

I have a similar albeit much more chronologically condensed relationship with Blood Meridian, but for different reasons. BM is just so unrelentingly dark and monotonous, so I have to step back for a while. But then the writing is just so perfect.

May I suggest Mike Duncan (who did the History of Rome) podcast? His entire podcast for the French Revolution is pretty damn good. All the set up episodes as well provide fantastic context
